The flat side or the short lead of the LED is negative.  The only work one way because they are diodes.

Awesome dog!  We have a miniature red that's 9 pounds, too.  He's "full of the dickens" as my dad would say.  He's five years old.  Some people got to meet him at Bfest in Milwaukee but he was a little edgy around all the strangers.
