I would doubt there is any real disadvantage with the plastic internal. Take the ecotec oil filter for example. All plastic construction. Ive changed hundreds with no notice of issues with the plastic. But to each their own .

How thick are the fans, what color are the boots (photos aren't work for me if they're posted) and do you have any used struts laying around? Looking for some to hack up.. might feel bad about hacking up some "new" ones. If not I might be able to get over it.

Brake fluid is possible but risky or you can try spray silicon lubricant. Its worth a shot to try and soften them. I use spray silicon lubricant on all weather stripping to keep it soft.
