You have to take the trans apart in order to do this. You must swap out the differentials that have the different style VSS gears. Here is what you should have in place of what is in the trans right now:

And yes, it should be a 2.97, as it is the original tranny.

The blocks/motors for all 3400's are the same... I believe in 01 they started using a different style rear exhaust manifold that was more "header" like... other than that, a couple emissions crap changed, I don't think there is much difference... the HP rating is more likely a subtle chang...

I know in 92 and/or 93 the 5spds used internal slave cylinders (bleh! ), but as it was mentioned above, I believe the earlier trannies had better low end gearing.
