I need new cables as well. Please inform. Money is no object. Can't drive if can't shift.

Like Jon said. It literally takes seconds to change that setting. No one who knew any better wasted any time being bothered by a check box.

That's because he doesn't want to do them. We have 7 different styles of shift cables or something insane like that.

And DOS commands are still very much used. Dare I say, every few hours? No IT professional DOESNT know how to use a command prompt. For all real diagnostic issues. I can't stress enough the *use it all the time* part of that. And beyond that, Windows 3.1 had a very useable GUI, so I'm not even sure ...

Re: Old computer, older OS, old junk is better (and worse)

I like my computers like I like my cars... Old but reliable, slightly modified or upgraded, with only the bells-and-whistles it needs to suit me , not some corporate jerk who thinks it is trash if it isn't 'now'. Why W2k over XP? Mostly, the so-called upgrades on XP changed the layout of the user i...

Re: Old computer, older OS, old junk is better (and worse)

Corporate environments have a good reason not to upgrade, and typically only do so when Microsoft removes support for old products.

Mission critical apps might only run on XP for example.

Start is Back works on 8.1, just adds the start menu back, no bloat.

Re: Old computer, older OS, old junk is better (and worse)

I like Windows 8.1. I have touch screen and non touch screen computers. I have a Windows Phone, a Surface Pro 2 tablet, list goes on.

Anyway, you can get a program called Start Is Back, and it does what it says. It's 3 dollars, and you get a multi PC license.

What has Microsoft done to piss you off personally? Computers are so incredibly cheap I cannot understand why someone would use old stuff like that. I build a new PC every two years. I spend under 1200 dollars. And that's extreme to me. You can build a great home computer with amazing features for u...

Re: pc gaming advice....

Steam is a digital game delivery service run by the Valve Corporation. They make some great games, and they have some awesome sales. If you're looking for cheap, I suggest checking out the Humble Bundle website as well. Plus you get to pick a great charity for your money to go to. Most of the games ...

Re: pc gaming advice....

Counter Strike. Get it from Steam. Forget the controller. Mouse and keyboard is superior.

Re: Old computer, older OS, old junk is better (and worse)

Windows XP was an amazing operating system. My windows 8.1 laptop boots from cold to desktop in 12 seconds. XP, 2000, 7 and 8 are ALL NT architecture. Windows 2000 and XP are essentially the same OS. The only differences are visual styles, driver compatibility and minor performance tweaks. So not su...
