Replacing Steering Rack / Which to buy?

Post by Quad4Z26 »

So car has been running great no problems, Ive been daily driving it since I finished the 3500 swap. Then steering rack went bad! Looking for pionters in replacing the steering rack. Never done this before, looks really tight to get the rack out of there with drivetrain still in. I hope its doable...

Also where and which rack do I buy? Want something close to stock or shorter turn ratio.

Any help is greatly appreciated.Thank You!

It can be done with the engine in...a lot easier with it out, but it can be done. I just had to swap mine recently. Yours may have failed due to the exhaust if it is close. Q4 Grand Ams have a heat sleeve for the rack to protect it that fits.

I got mine from Rock Auto spec'd for a GTZ. It is supposed to be the correct lock-to-lock but who knows with rebuilt stuff.

I've bought new, reman, and the rebuilding kit. Reman was in the end the cheaper most reliable option (still going strong) . Biggest plus to a rebuild kit was the options for gear ratio.

I am curious how this goes with 3500/3400 manifolds or headers. not so much room

Mine was tighter on the 91 with headers and a 5spd than it was on my 95 with manifolds and the auto. I took the brake booster off and that really helped.

I pulled mine in the red car with SS headers and had no issues... This last time I did the rack with the engine out IIRC... But I also do not need the boot shields with the ceramic coating on my exhaust... Only when I did a really bad coating of paint did I melt the bellows.

The autos are also an inch further forward in the engine bay than manuals. It doesn't sound like much, but it makes a difference! haha

I did it this past weekend, all went smooth, easier than I thought. Had to remove master cylinder then rack easily came out. Spent a good 4hrs on it. Car is driveable now, and feels much much better.

Thanks to everyone for the tips.
