Engine noise

Post by capecodberetta »

Hi ALL..............

I have a 1990 quad 4 2.3L eengine.
It runs great, but the engine has a ticking sound. It is similar to a "stuck rod" sound.
This is my first quad 4. Are they quiet when running, or not?
Thanks,
capecodberetta

Engine noise

Quads are not quiet. I had my friend jump me one time up at school. I left my lights on. He had an 89 camaro v8 and I have a quad. When we got my car started you could hear my quad over his v8 standing in front of his car. Quads are very noisy. As far as the ticking sound goes I don't know. I would have to hear it to at least have an idea. I hope I answer one of your questions.

Ticking is probably a valve click.  Check out the valve train by holding a screwdriver on the cover and listening with your ear on the end.  Move from vavle to valve and see if you can isolate which one it is.

UPDATE:
I noticed that it does more "ticking" on deceleration, or for any back pressure on the engine.
Is that normal?

Did you try listening to the valves? I taking a wild guess here but maybe try the trick with the screwdriver and listen to the timing chain. I have never noticed a ticking noise from my quad on deceleration. You have quite the interesting issue here. Keep us posted on your progress.

I just finished doing a search on "ticking noise" and it looks like you could maybe get some info from any of the topics previously posted could help. Good luck.

valve lash can be a problem on decel when the oil pressure and volume drop.  Mainly it is a volume problem, most engines do not need high pressure pumps, but high volume is a big benefit.  Check out the valves and the timing chain (poor oiling?).  Could just be a poor lifter or chain flop when not loaded.  Shouldn't be a exhaust leak as those are heard louder on rev.
