How difficult is it to replace starter on 90 GTZ

Post by randy3232 »

I need to replace the starter on a 1990 GTZ I just purchased and am trying to decide if this is something I can do myself or if I need a mechanic. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Depends on your level of mechanical ability. It's not terrible difficult -- It's 2 bolts and a few electrical connectors. Nothing complicated but it is located underneath your intake manifold. If you still need to buy the new starter, a good option is the 96-99 (maybe other years) Cavalier Z24 starter. The TwinCam starter is small and lighter, but bolts in the same way as the stock Quad starter.

Always remove battery connections before connecting a wrench to the starter terminal.
Don't ask how I remember to do that. :D
