Best RTV sealant for lower intake?

Post by whiteretta »

On my 3400, the kit comes with black RTV, but I've also heard that the copper RTV is the best for the lower intake. Can anybody help clarify?

The RTV that comes in the kit is perfect to use. i have used them three of four times and never had any problems. Only other RTV i have used is the grey gasket maker and that works pretty good too. But the stuff the kit came with is just fine, you wont have any problems with it. Just make sure you put a heavy bead down on the block between the heads and if you have enough left over, outline the coolant ports on the heads and i guarantee you will never have that leak ever again ;) GL

Yeah use the kit supplied or use the black RTV. Make sure you put a drop on the valve cover gaskets where those little corners are. Just a dab on each one.

I never put any on the coolant ports... *shrug

Yeah the coolant port deal was something a GM tech suggested doing. Ive done it since the first one i did. I guess its just for extra assurance :)

I used the black for the valley's and my current engine I ONLY applied sealant where it was found on a factory motor, and 1 year later its as dry as when I built it... Every other motor that I slathered up with silicone has leaked somewhere.
