-89 Gtu oil leak

Post by z 28 jari »

Hi,
greetings from Finland. My father has a -89 gtu beretta(2.8 v6+5 speed man).It has suddenly leak oil from engine to top of transmission. Is there some typical place of these 2.8 v6 engines where they start to leak oil?It seems that it doesn't leak from valve covers.

Thanks,
Jari

The oil pump drive plug, aka where a distributor would be on the engine if it wasn't electronic ignition.

Agreed, 100%. I would bet a steak dinner that's where your leak is coming from.

Btw, he means if it wasn't a DISTRIBUTOR-LESS Ignition System aka D.I.S.

Distributor ignition systems are still electronic. :D

I third it about the dummy shaft o-ring seal. Replaced it at least three times over the life of this car.

Wow another from Finland! So that's four now!
What about the Small Block Chevy distibutor seal to go with the stock one?
Damn there needs to be a write up on this with part numbers.

I used the small-block seal and o-ring on my old 2.8. Never had any issues or taken apart anything on the 3400.

Depending on how smooth the surfaces are, some Loctite 518 might work wonders too..

Hi again,I tried reply twice, but seems that replys are gote to byte heaven...
Yes you were right.Oil leak was at oil pump plug o-ring.I measured old o-ring and dimensions are:
OD->31.5mm ID->25.8mm height->3.9mm

edit:Sorry forgot to say.Oil leak is fixed now.

Yes it is black. My father has owned it since -92.It was ~10 tkm's driven when he bought it.
We test drive few berettas before this, first was -98 gt and other was red -89 gtu ,but this was like new when he bought it.
very trouble free kilometers.Mid of nineties ecu went shot.Idle went crazy it jumps between 500 and 2000 rpm. That was time before cheap diagnostic programs or internet...Ecu did't give any troublecodes, only code 12.I think first it was faulty iac,but it did'nt solve problem.Next step was new ecu which helped.
Few years ago crank sensor went bad.Car stops suddenly and starts after sitting few minutes. After new cranksensor car runs fine.
And ofcourse there is normal wearing parts that has been replaced(drive joints, brake rotors etc..)
These days it is easy. You have forums like this, and Rockauto...

Regards,
Jari
