The "Twin Cam" current state

Post by Godlike »

ImageMy dad and I picked up this car from Dave Holst 5 or 6 years ago. It wasn't perfectly rust free underneath then but was in pretty good shape and it was straight and super clean inside and out. Under the hood this thing looked showroom like it came with the LD9 and it looked brand new.
We bought it for my sister at the time and I probably should have kept it for my self and given her my Z26. But I like having a dd with an automatic and I like Getrags better than Isuzu transitions.
My sister wrecked it twice while she had it... After having the car for a year or so she T-boned a fib who pulled out in front of her. I had a friend at a body shop pull the radiator support straight and I tracked down the front end parts I needed and put it back together.
Once we fixed it my dad drove the car for a while then she borrowed it to go to the bars one night and brought it back wrecked again. No idea of what happened of course. I could tell by the battle scars that she ran it through a fence which crushed the fender, dented the hood and left a drag mark down the door. ImageImage
So they drove it that way for a while until my brother in law smoked the clutch. A shift cable bushing popped off and he just drove around in 4th until it would go no more. After all that I picked it up. I parked it for a while then finally pulled the trans out and looked it over. Ive pulled different beretta transmitions out about 5 separate times but this is the first time Ive dropped the left cradle only and pulled the trans out cvs and all which worked well and saved a lot of time.
Cack Auto Parts got me a clutch kit and a set of booger Bushings pro bono. I had a machine shop mill the flywheel and slapped it back together. And of course it didn't work right. Why would it? So after walking away from it for about a month I decided to try a new master and slave as maybe they had some internal blow by. Fixed! It had 3 compound problems!!! While the car was in the air I looked at the rear breaks. The e-brake did nothing so I pulled the drums off and the right side shoes were burnt off, the slave was leaking and the e-brake cable was broken clean off. 3 compound issues again! And of course the brake line broke off the old slave when I took it out. Why wouldnt it?
Everythings good now though and Im driving it to work lately to get the clutch broken it properly. But this is car number 7 right now so its gotta go. I will probably be making a listing on this forum when Im actually ready to move it. Someone here needs to buy this thing and bolt an M62 on it.ImageImage

Wow....an LD9 in a Beretta.

How does that run? Does it have the LD9 PCM and BCM as well?

OBD II tuning at your disposal. Hello HPTUNERS!

I wouldnt try boost just N/A. Only LD9's 00-02 i would attempt a speed density boost tune file. That alpha-n is for suckers on boost.

Huh, I never realized the supercharger kits were for 00' up. I think it ran a 16.2 at bfest Canada with a collapsed flex pipe. The low end torque it has is cool. It breaks the tires loose randomly in 1st and 2nd at partial throttle.

Flex fuel... lol

That's tempting to pick up. Somewhat historic/nostalgic car there.

Ya, its a gm badge. I can't remember if I ordered it for something specific or not.
I took it to a weird station by me with E85. Its a really small station, full service and the only place near by with E85. I told the kid to fill it up and the owner (crazy bastard) came running out and yelled at us saying we couldn't put E85 in it. I pointed at the flexfuel badge but he was pretty sure the world would end if we put ethanol in that car.
Dave said it got pretty decent mileage with E85.

My bad on the badge. But for E85 cars, arent the injectors supposed to be capable to handle E85 or does it matter?

I believe he usually only ran about half E85 in it if my memory serves me right.

As for the injectors, they're larger than normal (you'll use about 40% more E85 than gasoline). The larger difference is some way for the PCM to tell the ethanol percentage. Some have fuel composition sensors, some just use O2 sensor readings.

I've always liked this car. Glad to see you've got it back in safe/running condition again after some TLC! :D
