Any tips/tricks on replacing a slave cylinder?

You have to replace just the cylinder?

If so, pull the whole thing out as an assembly and do all the line connections and bleeding on the workbench.

She's back on all fours ready to go! Except... I think there needs to be some more clutch bleeding done, the pedal felt really light. I bled it the same way I did my Camaro's hydraulics: unhooking the pedal rod, removing the slave and reservoir cap and slowly pumping the slave rod until the bubbles stop appearing in the reservoir. What other procedure is there?

Better fix that upper radiator hose clamp... That might suck.

That clamp was leaking so I moved it and put on a worm gear clamp. So right now it has 3 total, 1 unused. I'm too lazy to drain the coolant to remove it.

I read about another bleeding method. Sounds like a pain in the ass, but foolproof.

Things you will need:

1. 1 gallon container, of D.O.T. 3 approved brake fluid.. (that you can submerge the slave cylinder in) and
cut the top off of.

2. 1 friend to help you.

3. The tools to remove the entire clutch hydraulic system from the car. (a 15mm deep and a 13mm
deep), and of course three inch extension, maybe a six inch-er too?

4. 1 correctly sized pin punch to remove the pin/line from the slave cylinder.

5. 1 hammer to drive the punch.

6. The patience to know once your done, it WILL be bled just as the factory did it.




The steps you need to take:

Step 1: Remove the entire system from the car.

Step 2: Remove the pin from the slave cylinder and take the line off at the slave cylinder (by removing
the punch pin)

Step 3: Cut the top off the gallon container of brake fluid.

Step 4: Submerge the slave into the container (with the slave facing up) when I say up, I mean with the
fluid entry facing up to the sky.

Step 5: Fill the reservoir to the top (leave the cap off)

Step 6: Put the open line into the gallon of fluid. (Off the MASTER cylinder)

Step 7: Fill (and keep full) the master and pump until there are no more bubbles.

Step 8: Re-mate the line and the cylinder under the brake fluid.

Step 9: then re-drive the pin threw the hole on the "hard" line from the "master"

Step 10: reinstall the entire system on the car.

Man, I've n ever heard of doing it that way... But I sure don't miss that older setup.

I usually would do it out of the car though.

Cliff, how did you do it? Because I might have to remove the trans mount bracket (and front header) to remove the whole hydraulic system. Or can you slide it all over the snout of the trans and out the fender well? ...thinking out loud...

I did remove it in one piece, I just didn't remove the line from the slave to bleed it... But at least for me the line didn't go under any brackets or anything.. It just comes right out.

Took it for a drive last night and the clutch works fine. Bleeding the hydraulics was a pain in the balls but worth it. Lost 3-4-5-R on the way home and discovered the clip holding the shift cable to the shifter popped off. Need to remove the shifter to fab the knob adapter anyway, so that is an easy fix. Today I'm finishing up all the urethane & fiberglass prep for paint. Weather is shitty, but I should be able to spray by Tuesday.

If you need any of those clips that hold them on I think i have a ton extra.. If i remember right they were like a pack quantity of 10.

Yesterday I took the day off from work since it was nice out and we're stuck on 32hrs/wk. I got everything primed, painted & cleared (as well as finished moving in to my new house). I got a couple pics but nothing to post yet. Maybe I'll go on pic strike until it's all finished and assembled. Probably not though, I'm a photo whore. haha

The shifter is out and at work so today I can machine an adapter for my 4th-gen F-body knob. Inspection appt is tomorrow.
