Don't waste your time. There are no parts available for the 284, and whether it is actually a stronger transmission is questionable. It did receive something like a 25ft/lb higher input torque rating than the 282, but many people, myself included have proven the 282 able to handle power levels far higher than GM rated. They are used behind 400hp+ LSx engines in fieros, and I myself am somewhere in the 350-375hp range.

Rodney is right in that they are a bitch to find parts for.

FWIW, I broke a 282 with a mostly stock 3400, but haven't torn it down to see exactly what the culprit was yet. Everything is getting so old for these cars now I wouldn't consider anything bulletproof.

Woody I wouldn't consider your failure a power/torque related failure. Something else gay happened on the shifting side of things.

I haven't seen anyone shear a shaft, crack a gear, or strip a spline yet on these trannies in a fwd. I have heard of a few diff failures however but i don't know the details

I also thought about the swap but decided not too because I couldn't even find one except for the gtp 88scga that he posted out of a junkyard and I think a couple lumina z34s that were posted by someone but cross your fingers cause parts will take months to find it's just so hard to find w-bodys anymore cause there typical trailing arm bracket rot out then they got crushed :( wish I could go back in time and buy them up when they were everywhere in salvage yards

$300 i could buy the trany and all the parts attached. but i came across a better find.. a 2010 g6 with a 3500 and auto, i already grabbed the heads and intake but i think im going back to grab the whole motor/trany and make it fit in a black 96 Z. YEAHHHHHH lol.. i will also not be posting any pictures until i start the long winter project on the build but i can say i found a black 96 z for the project.
