Post by YoshiNote »

I'm sure this has been asked many times and I'm sorry that I couldn't find it on the forms but what do I need to read the codes for a check engine light on my 95 Chevy Beretta with a 12 pin connector with only A & M existing I included a picture of the port I'm hoping I can just get a connector for a computer and run software to read it any help would be great thank you so much

Unfortunately, '95s are a serious =@ (I have two of them). Not OBD-1, not OBD-2. You need a scanner with an OBD-1 GM connector, that specifies it is compatible with the '95 GM products. Many older OBD-1 Code-Readers were nothing more than a fancy housing with a two-pin connector and an LED, that simply jumpered the diagnostic pins in the link you have pictured -these won't work on a '95. I have an Inova brand OBD 1&2 scanner that reads OBD-2 data AND OBD-1 codes (no data though). I also have an old Snap-On MT-series 'brick' that works great for the older cars, codes and data. Either way, nothing there is cheap. Older Chevys with the OBD-1 were awesome -plug in a paper-clip and count the 'Service Engine' light flashes -there is your code. GM just got stupid in '95 for some reason. :Search:

They will typically come with software that will read the ECU.

Example of something that should pull your codes.
