I think now the thermostat should be in question if not the HG not holding pressure perhaps...

Did you end up getting a good fan for it?

What happened AGAIN it turns out is the plastic connector they sell for by-passing the heater core broke again.

It's a Dorman part that connects the 3/4 hose to the 5/8 hose.

Failed twice now! Just plain broke in half!! Both in the same area. PITA!

Going to look for a metal piece, or just break down and put a new heater core in the damn thing.

I would just pony-up the dough for brass connectors from a hardware store -probably about $10.00-15.00 for both pieces, maybe less. A 3/4" hose-barb to female NPT fitting, and a 5/8" hose-barb to male NPT fitting, five inches of Teflon pipe-thread tape, a pair of hose-clamps (which you already have), and you won't have to deal with it again until you have to replace those hoses, or until you want to fix the heater-core. Done. I tried using plastic plumbing parts in a heater-hose setup on a project back in the '90s, and they deformed from the heat. I know the Dorman bypass POS is a different material, but I came to the conclusion that this is yet another area where plastic is inappropriate. Good luck (you need it, I think :wink: )!

My thoughts exactly!! If I can find those pieces.

The thermostat and rad cap were both new when the rad was replaced in June.

They didn't mention that they couldn't find a 180 and put a 195 in instead. It's actually noticeable on the gauge.

As far as a fan is concerned it really hasn't made much of a difference without one.

As long as it's not leaking it hasn't been an issue at all. But then it is a brand new rad.

Ugh! For a Quad, 195 is irresponsible, IMO! How could they do that to your poor car? Where I was living before higher in the mountains, at 9,000 feet above sea-level, water boils before the thermostat even opens with a 195! (The Twin Cam 2.4 in my turbo Z-24 had all kinds of problems with a 195 -also related to a couple of bad reservoir-caps, but still... Even with a 50/50 glycol mix, I was having problems with minor boiling at that altitude, once I shut the engine down.) The Fail-Safe thermostats come in 180, no one else had a 180 a few years ago when I was looking around, then suddenly Auto Zone came out with one in their Duralast brand for a good price right after I gave up and starter driving around without a 'stat. Makes me wonder if they really hadn't been available, or if I was just talking with the wrong people at the various parts-stores... I think this was either before I had discovered Rock Auto (thanks DTMAce! :good: ), or I simply didn't want to wait for shipping, I don't recall for sure. But they are definitely available now.

I ran one of those Dorman 5/8-3/4 heater hose bypass adapters for a summer with no issues in my truck. But it was more out in the open in the engine bay than an L-body location. I'd just do the heater core and be done with it.

Is a Quad a 180 tstat from the factory? I know my truck is and I assumed the Beretta was as well. I know the Cruze is over 200.

Well it will get a new core when I swap the dash. Just have nowhere to do it til I get re-settled somewhere.

Have really no need for the heater in this car, but it will get one to keep it whole.

Now to go hunting for brass.

..Pretty sure OE spec is for a 195 degree -which as I said is irresponsible for a factory design. Of course, not everyone lives a mile and a half up, and even then a good mix of glycol should keep it from boiling, until the engine temperature inevitably spikes after shut-down that is, and of course the radiator cap (or pressurized reservoir cap) should also keep the bubbly-gurgly at bay, but because I had issues with it I am blaming GM for a bad design flaw. 8) That is just how I roll... :roll: (Self-deprecating humor here, in case that doesn't come across well through internet type, but I still feel that with the history of overheated Quads, the 2.4 Twin Cam should have come OE standard with a 180 degree stat, and I am 90% sure it had a 195.)
3400tZ, that is a nice looking piece, that would work fine too. I actually looked at those (or similar) when I was trying to re-configure the heater-core lines on the GTU's 3800 after the molded hose I had (from what car, I cannot recall, and all my records were lost when bstuff crashed and my computer was stolen) in the car started to leak. I had temporarily just used a 3/4" hose and replaced the nipple in the 3800's upper heater outlet with a 3/4" one instead of the 5/8" nipple it had (the 3800 series has a vast number of interchangeable heater-hose outlet/inlet nipples, that plug into the engine and point at different angles and have both 5/8" and 3/4" sizes available). I have now just finished setting up an EMT conduit line to eliminate a long stretch of that hose. I need to take a break from putting the GTU back together though, I have a lot of other things going on over the next couple of weeks, so she will have to wait for a little while longer. :(

Holy BRASS!!

$16 later the mother of all hose connectors is ready to go on.

Had to buy two barbs (boy is THAT an unfortunate choice of words) and a coupler, and it must weigh a pound at 5" long, but it will outlive me and the car!
