225/50/17?

Post by GTU89 »

Okay, right now my GTU has 205/40/17's (too small, I know) but I have a free set of 225/50/17s to put on it, should I just put two 225/50's on the rear and keep the 205/40's on the front or just swap them all to 225/50's?

What is the offset of your wheels?

225/50 is way too big. Even if it fits it would look retarded. They are like a full inch in diameter bigger than the factory size.
I have 205/50-17 on my car and I think they even look too tall.

225/50 and 205/50 are the same tallness wise, the 225's are just wider.

I don't know the offset of my wheels, they are OZ F1 Racing Cup's if that helps.

Stock size is 205/55/16 for my GTU.

Actually they are not the same.

Plug the numbers in and you will see why it's not recommended to go with the size you can get.

Remember, just because you can get them, doesn't mean you should.

They will not clear the front struts unless there worn really good. Will probably fit the rear but rub on big bumps.

I just threw out a set of 225/50/17 in favor of 225/45/17 on the back of my bimmer. Too much sidewall, made the car feel like a POS.

it's worth a shot... depends how wide the rims are. more side wall will give you a bit more comfy ride! 45 is usually the right #. i have 225/40r18's on mine, mind you they are half worn on the front and pretty low out back... no rubbing... well maybe a touch on inner fender plastics at full lock while the suspension moves... need new struts

I think the rims are a 35 offset.

I put the 225/50's on the rear and they fit fine. When I get new tires I may just go with 45's

People get tire sizes wrong all the time, so here's a little clarification. On a 225/50/17, they are 225mm wide, sidewall is 50% of 225mm tall and the rim diameter is 17.

I have 255/45/18 front and 295/45/18 rear tires on the Camaro and the backs are 1.3" taller in overall diameter even though the aspect ratio is the same. That's because 45% of 295mm is more than 45% on 255mm.

I don't recall the tire size, but I had 18 inch wheels at one point and had to smack the spring base mount with a hammer for them to fit. Hence why I went back to 17s.

Surprisingly the 225/50's fit perfectly on the rear, no rubbing so far either. I know its stupid to have bigger tires on the rear of a fwd, but its better than massive wheel gap in the back, right? lol

As long as you are shooting to drive over a beach ball....

Putting larger tires on to reduce wheel gap just lifts your car... kind of counter productive if you ask me.

This is what lowering springs are for...

oh yeah I also forgot it will SLOW you down a lot... extra rotating weight and killing the gear ratio.
