What's the difference between the 6-173 for the 2.8 and the 6-191 for the 3.1?

From what i was told a while ago, the 2.8 tranny has more take off, so the lower gears are geared down where as the 3.1 is geared up a little more, giving you more top speed but a slower take off.  I dont know how reliable my source is, but thats what i know.

There are both 125c from 87-93, 94 they went to the 4 speed. I don't know of any lower geared first gear for the 2.8...I have heard that alos but I have yet to pay attention to the gear ratio when I tear one down:D

He's talking about the 5spds guys.

I know in 92 and/or 93 the 5spds used internal slave cylinders (bleh! ), but as it was mentioned above, I believe the earlier trannies had better low end gearing.

ahhh oopppss;)

As I remember the gear ratios were different for the muncie and getrag boxes but I never paid much attention to it. I know my 89  spd was a slug from the start while my 90GT 5spd is an animal...1rst gear is about useless

When I had my '89 Base 2.8 5 speed, I went through 7 trannys and 3 clutches in 2 years from racing at the track. I used various V6 trannys from '87 to '90 and I really never noticed any difference in the performance of my car based on the tranny changes. It stayed very consistent at the track as far as my times were concerned. Just my .02

OK.......as usual, I have to post on this AGAIN, but.......

ALL the 5 speed Muncie/V6 trannies have the same GEARING. Doesn't matter if they came on a 2.8L car, or a 3.1L , or a base, or a GT. ALL have the same gear ratios and axle ratio.

These ratios are:

1st   3.50
2nd   2.05
3rd   1.38
4th   0.94
5th   0.72
Axle  3.61

Notice 1-3rd gears are IDENTICAL to the 1st-3rd gears on the later Getrags that came on Quads.........
They just have the wider spacing into 4th and 5th, plus the older 3.61 axle ratio for the lower reving character of the MPFI V6 engines.

If anybidy has noticed a differrence in takeoff between earlier and later Beretta's, it's the engine (more torque on a 3.1L), not the tranny.

Oh....the 3 speed auto's (3T40, TH125C etc.) have the same internal gearing for all years (2.84 1st, 1.60 2nd, 1.00 3rd), but the V6's switched from a 3.18 axle ratio to a 2.84 in 90 or 91. This is what lengthens the gears out.......the 4 cylinders satyed as 3.18's though.
