Re: My Legacy Rebuild...
Wouldn't directly own up to the mistake being theirs, I said it looked like it was from the stone of a hone tool and his reply was "honestly I don't know what to say" but he decked the block within the .004 spec that Subaru is said to be allowed and it got rid of that mark as far as it encroaching on the gasket surface area. There is still a tiny bit of it but it's inside of the gasket, not worth replacing the block over. He's also going to 100mm bore, which is a total of around .020 over to clear up whats left of that mark in the cylinder, and when he did the decking on that half he noticed some area's that were uneven possibly from regular heat and such, so he recommended having the other side done as well. This also works out because the .25mm over pistons I had were for an EJ257 STI motor which is 8.2CR... the .50mm pistons I'm getting are for an EJ255 WRX motor which is my original 8.4CR so that's good.
We'll see what the bill looks like when I go to pick it all up next week, I'm willing to split the decking cost because it was needed on the other half due to age of the block, but I'm not paying for the half he f-ed up and made me get done, as well as I'm only paying for the bore/hone once. I may also bring it to another shop for a check over, And also try to build a relationship with that shop, because due to this mistake I wont bring my stuff to my original guy again.

Re: My Legacy Rebuild...
I'd take a high powered LED flashlight with you and check it out when you pick it up. It may not be much help this time, but would have helped last time. Then the block would have stayed there and there would have been proof that they did it.
I'm sure if it came to a lawsuit they could say you dropped the head on it. Not that it would come to that.

I didn't have the head... they did... lol
shops not big enough to support a lawsuit over something like that... I think if I give enough gruff he will let it slide.

Re: My Legacy Rebuild...
Ok well I'll be honest, this is my first time building one of these so I have an excuse... LOL
I got to put the bottom end together TWICE!!! lol
Once without the coolant o-ring and the second time with it Hey I got to see if my method of applying the silicone worked out and it appeared that it would have so I did it the same way when I put it back together.
I guess you could say its better that I realized that I forgot it and it NEEDED to be there because of what the pipe was, but the illustration I was working on pointed out three o-rings and not the fourth so I overlooked it. Once I realized it was a coolant passage I was like WHOA wait here that's right in the crankcase it NEEDS to be sealed.
You can see it missing in this photo... lol
The cute little crank with the rods.
And finally almost a short block
Just need to gap the rings and install the pistons.
And yes the motor will be seeing some paint before it goes in, no way to clean all that crap off without sandblasting it... Just plain ole aluminum silver though, nothing fancy.
Bores came up perfect for clearance, 3 and 4 were .0003 tight so I'll re-measure the pistons and see if any are slightly smaller and put those in those two cylinders, but .0003 isn't enough to sweat over. Either way none of them are larger than 3.937 which is good since I don't want any excess noise from extra clearance.

Re: My Legacy Rebuild...
Wait...you are doing pistons after the rods? How is that possible?

LOL I was waiting for that...woody90gtz wrote:Wait...you are doing pistons after the rods? How is that possible?
Easier to post the installation instructions than try to explain it.
Pistons wont go up from the bottom due to the journals so this is how its done when it's flat...
Re: My Legacy Rebuild...
Yeah, I found that kinda odd myself. LOL
But that is pretty slick. Built in access.

Re: My Legacy Rebuild...
Everything from Japan is weird. So there are no main caps, just two block halves and the rods need to be installed when the block is sandwiched. I guess it makes sense. Weird though.

Gotta have a sense of humor with all of this
Damn the head torquing procedure is WEIRD!

Re: My Legacy Rebuild...
I like the smiley faces on the pistons. Wonder how long it will take to burn that off... LOL Be funny if several years from now, someone pulled the engine apart to find that.
