Fun at the dealer

Post by ifixalot »

My daughter's Saturn got recalled again because the key sometimes won't turn off beyond the acc position.
She took it in to the dealer. They tried to talk her into $1800 worth of additional repairs.
$200 for a trans flush because the fluid is a bit dark.
$600 for a trans-axle seal that is leaking.
$600 for sway bar bushings. He says her are cracked and it's a safety concern.
$300 for sway bar ends.
After texting me, she declined the extra work and they attempted the ignition switch repair.
She then brings the car to me. I see oily residue on one side of the trans axle but not enough to even cause a drip to form.
I see the center sway bar bushings have loose paint but otherwise are still there and look OK, not cracked like they told her.
I see the sway bar links have no play but one has the rubber boot loose. So I replace that with a $26 link.
I tell her to get the trans fluid changed at a shop near her home so I don't have to deal with the used fluid.
I then do some other misc inspection and repair loose heat shield etc.
She goes home and texts me that her ignition won't turn off form acc again. So she brings it back
and I get into that which IMHO, turns out to be just lubrication and adjustment. But I find some dummy
assembled her gear selector wrong so that there was no orange position indicator visible for PRND321
So that was my Sunday. Inspect to confirm the dealer is full of S**T and repair what they didn't.
At least she got a free cup of coffee while she waited for a few hours for them to, ahem, "fix" her car.

Classic sad and now more frequent story coming from people having shops or dealers do work. A large majority of the straight from school tech's are hacks and don't know how to do anything... It's a sad world we live in.

I have a friend who took his 2014 Avenger in for some warranty work and had the dealer do an oil change while it was there. He tried to change the oil recently and needed a breaker bar to get the drain bolt on the pan free.

From one personal experience a long time ago and from always hearing others talk about their car and mechanic troubles, I firmly believe that the "ASE Certified" title is bogus. lol
