Exhaust/muffler ideas

Post by ClonedGTZ »

im kinda in the need for a new exhaust system since my left pipe is rotted out. my idea was to do 2 1/2 from header back w/ a magnaflow high flow cat and either thrush muffler or maybe trying out the Hushpower muffler from flowmaster , new tips and keeping the dual look in the rear. i want it to have an almost V8 sound or sound like a 60's V6 with glasspacks
any ideas ?

has anyone tryed the hushpower muffler on there Rettas yet ?

here what it looks like now from the rear

ditch the duals please. You'll never get that sound without a good sized cam. Closest sound to that on the forums is 3XXX modified's car.

WOT-Tech has some cams and other stuff. No headers though. How many miles do you have on this 3.1? A cam change is best on a new or rebuilt engine. If your just looking for exhaust tone I'd skip the cam. You will need to tune if the cam is too big. It's not cheap to have those crapy 3.1 manifolds done. 3400's flow much better, but have D ports. No one makes headers for our cars. Some people use Grand Am headers, but they cost alot and you have to move the fan and the coils to get them to fit. Take that with a grain of salt, because I have not put them on. They may also have D ports.

its got 112k on it . it car seems kinda slugish so maybe doing something like the cam will give me a good reason to rebuild it and do some other minor engine mods. to have the intake (both halfs) done it would o=cost me almost $1,000 not including having the top part powder coated white. a buddy of mine had a beretta and he ported and polished the heads on it, put on a flowmaster muffler and it was pretty quick and nice sounding

I was wondering about Hushpower muffler for mine. My straight-through Borla is ridiculously loud. WOT it sounds awesome, but the part-throttle/decel drone now is a little much.

Not to sound pessimistic, but it's almost stupid to build up a 3.1L when 3400s are so cheap & easy.

he needs a flat tappet cam, not a roller so other companies do sell them. I just recommended the cam to get the "sound" you were looking for.

All of Ben's cams are flat tappet, but now he has some Comp Cam rollers for those of us that have the 3100(or 3400 and the 3500). I was just thought if he only wanted them for the exhaust sound there is not much of a point in doing it, that and the miles are getting kind of up there.
It has been done, the 3.8 that is, but a 3400 would go in there much more easy.

I think http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_prix/index.php has a good amout of 3.8 stuff. You can get things for the 3.1 but you get more from a 3400 swap. What are your plans for the 3.1?

How much will that cost on the intakes? By the way, wicked-irocz makes some great down pipes, PM him. What do you have to do on the Regal?

That would take alot of funds. Check on that down pipe if you have anything left over. :)
