car is trying to start itself while it's already running!

Post by whiteretta »

I have no idea why the car is doing this, and I'd like the problem solved as soon as possible!

I had the car idling today, just got the engine finished a few days back, and after a minute or two I heard a wierd noise from the engine bay, like the starter attempted to engage. I shut the car off, and it was still trying to start itself, alternator running, starter whirring away! I had to disconnect one of the battery cables to stop it!

Any ideas, pointers? All help is appreciated!

Sounds like a short in the wiring. Going to have to trace it down man, about all I can suggest.

I know a good exorcist I can recommend you to. Did wonders on my car.

But really, I've never heard that one before. Totally new. I agree with Ace. You may have a short somewhere.

does the car have an old remote start kit on it that could be attempting to start it?

This is also somewhat commonly caused by a faulty solenoid or problems with the lever mechanisim to engage the starter into the flywheel.

Yep, that was it Iroc, the solenoid was shot!

I'm not too surprised, the starter looked pretty rough when I pulled it to bench test it. Put a new one on there and no more self-starting lol.
