Cam Shaft upgrade, thoughts?

Post by Beretta1234567 »

What is the stock cam degree and lift specs for the 3.1L MPFI v6?
What is it for the 3100 SFI v6?
Are the CAMS interchangable between these two engines?

I am considering going to a 278/288 with 0.420/0.443 lift on the valves using stock rocker ratio.
Will this function with the stock springs? or is there risk of valves tapping the pistons or valve floating?

Looking to buy this for my 3.1L MPFI engine, and possibly using it years later in my 3100 SFI if its interchangable.

I'm considering just a cam upgrade for now. Maybe later I will buy the forged pistons and add boost, havent decided wether to wait or do it all at once yet.

3.1L and 3100 cams are not interchangeable... One is a roller profile 3100, and the other is flat tappet style lifters... and then the cam gear is also held on with one large bolt on the 3100 and three small bolts like the old small block cams for the 3.1.

any cam upgrade where your increasing the duration and lift that much you should defiantly replace the springs.

Your best source for info on what to do and the best route to go can be better answered on 60degreev6.com because I know many on there have actually modified MPFI engines... This forum unfortunately does lack a large group that has modified the engines in their Beretta's.

I just wanted to make certain the differences.

Because summit racing does not show the differences between the 3.1 and the 3100.

They just call out 2.8, 3.1, and 3.4

I figured i would need springs, i was just curious if the stock springs were strong enough depending on how far i go with the cam.

Springs are the limiting factor in stock form. Adding in better springs increases the chances of a snapped cam shaft... going with a performance cam from a niche vendor will mitigate that issue... but then the timing chain set becomes the next limit. Catch 22.

Summit only calls out those motors because that's what they fit... Nothing 94 and newer 3.1L or 3.4L

This is the Kit I was considering buying:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-k ... /chevrolet

says it fits the 2.8, 3.1, and 3.4.

I figure if it calls out the 2.8/3.1, it should work, because it is also a flat tappet style.
I dont think the 1 bolt or 3 bolt should matter when holding the timing gear onto the cam as long as everything lines up and the taps match the cam.

comes with cam, gears, chain, taps, springs, and retainer locks.

What do you think of this kit?

That cam will work in a mpfi motor but it will not work in the sfi motor later if that's what you hope to do.

As Jon has tried to point out, THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGABLE!!

NO WAY! NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!

And by the time you buy that and the associated other stuff required (gaskets, break in oils and such), you would be well on your way to a 3x00 swap already.

Hell, you have to damn near pull the engine to put the cam in anyway.

Don't waste your money on a dinosaur.
