Swap HP Numbers, anyone have proof?

Post by DUBS28 »

So obviously the 3400 and 3500 swaps are popular. My question is where are the numbers? Pre swap dyno and post swap dyno, pre swap 1/4 mile times, post swap 1/4 mile times. Post up your proof that it is worth it. Or is it more of a reliability gain? What's the benefits?

Well, I don't have any pre-swap numbers, but everybody knows the 3100 in our cars had 160hp at the crank, so that's around 130ish at the wheels depending on drivetrain (auto or manual swapped).

I'm pretty sure Jon has dyno numbers for his car, but I don't know what those values are.

My car was dynoed during BFest 09. I have the graph at home, but it put down 184HP and 204TQ at the wheels. If you factor in 15% drivetrain loss for the 5spd manual, that's around 210HP and 235TQ at the crank. I'd say that's a substantial gain. Hell, the numbers I put down are higher at the WHEEL than the factory ratings at the CRANK.

Things to factor for those numbers (mods and drivetrain):
99 3400 - Tuned by Pink
Ported/polished upper and lower intake manifolds by WOT-Tech
Ported/polished heads by WOT-Tech
SI valves
Comp Cam springs
19lb injectors
CAI
2.25" exhaust, stock 3100 manifolds
FFP crank pulley
Fidanza 8lb flywheel
Getrag HM-282 5spd
12" rotors (read: heavy)
17" Enkei Shoguns (read: heavy)

pre swap my best was 16.25 1/4 mile ( with a very low trap speeds something like 80-83 that was bone stock. And after the swap with the 65throttle body and nothing else on my 3500. I did 14.9xx at 93.xxmph. And it seems I am in the slowest bunch for this swap. So it very worth it for a swap less then 1000$

headders,A GOOD tune, bigger injectors, A 5 SPEED OR A warmed over auto, you could see low 14 high 13. And these engines seems to love boost...

Intake/exhaust 3100/auto I went 16.4@84 best. Same setup went 15.2@90 with the 3400 and 14.9@92 with the 3400 and an exhaust cutout. New car with the 3400/5spd & headers just went 14.5@94 with a lazy launch and 14.4@92 with trans trouble. I'm thinking 14.0-14.2 would be about right with a clean run.

Best i've ran was a 14.8@93
With a bad wheelbearing and my clutch was already burnt after only a few thousand miles.Bone stock 2003 3400/with headers and cutout.5/speed car.Im sure like eric said with a good track and perfect run low 14's would be easy=)

I don't understand what there is to prove. One engine is rated at 160 from gm, the replacement 3400 was rated up to 185 or so. I think that sums it up. This is comparison for swapping from a 3.1 or 2.8 http://www.v6z24.com/howto/3400/intro

I was just wondering. I will be inheriting a '98 or '99 Grand Am at some point, hopefully later then sooner but was wondering if a engine swap would be beneficial.

In other words, worth your time in messing with it? Many people seem to think so. 3400 swap will give you the most gain without having to really do much, if you want to keep it simple. Otherwise it can be tweaked and modded a bit, or you can go with a 3500 build if you are really ballzy and aren't afraid of some work.

Cool, yeah that helps a lot. Is there one that can be modded more then the other? I hope to do a single turbo on what ever I do, even if I keep it 3100. Really the 625hp Quad4 build I heard about sounds more like what I want. When all my car club is running in the 11's and I'm in the 18's I start to think I need to find a way to make a Beretta a lot faster.

I know Rodney (3400beretta) has had VERY good luck running a 3500 Turbo. Those motors seem made for boost.

if you want to run 11' ( and you are serious about it) I suggest the 3.8Sc swap. expensive, yes. but a GIANT aftermarket and 11 is more easily attainable.

This! ^ I've done it 3 times, (series 1 and 2), but not to a Beretta yet....

may be a stupid question, but is there an upgrade in power moving from a 3100 to a 3400, WITHOUT replacing the compu? so running on the 3100 programming...

Yes. I ran my 95Z like that from 06-09 and it was great.

did it feel just like the 3100, or did it have more get up and go? (probably another dumbas$ question... newer motor, compared to well used... hard to tell?)
