How much power would a crane cam add?

Post by GTU89 »

I know it wouldn't add a whole lot of power, but has anyone done this before to the 2.8 on here? $146 doesn't seem like a bad deal at all, especially considering the sound you get 8) Also, has anyone done one and not had to take the engine out?

Also, sorry if this has been posted before, I just don't like the search on here because it doesn't give me results half the time, maybe its the internet browser I'm using?

Boy you are taking me back many years. I'd say it was something like 7-10hp, 15hp tops, but that would be unheard of. You will need a chip and I hope you engine is rebuilt.Oh yes springs would be needed to.

Nope, engine is as far as I know all original, with ~175K miles.

I know, minimal gain from a decent amount of work. But that sound...lol

What do you think? LOL Regardless, I don't know why you want to cam a worn out high mile engine. Do it once, and do it RIGHT! :deadhorse: :burn:

Well, obviously I was not sure or I wouldn't have asked, anyway that part was a bit stupid I admit, just a bit of stupid hopeful thinking.
I wouldn't consider it worn out, it has good oil pressure and all. And yes, I know if I take the engine out then I might as well rebuild it.

And okay, that's around the gains I was expecting. This probably won't happen for awhile as I should be focusing on my LeMans.

No, just go get a 3400 and put a cam in that and throw 3500 heads on it and then toss the old 2.8 to the JY... then you'll be happy :)

Hah, what I really would like to do is get a 3800SC and throw it in. IIRC the 3400 is supposed to be "easier" to swap in than the 3800, right?

The 3400 can be gotten from a Impala, GM minivan..ect right? I've never heard of the 3500 other than on this site though.

Yes 3400 is typically more straight forward since you can keep the basic structure of the motor mount setups and it doesn't all have to be re-created. And engine control is easier to accomplish since the stock 89 ECU will run a 3400 as long as you tune it... I do not believe the 89 ECU would work a 3800 but I could be wrong.

3500 is mentioned on 60degreev6.com a lot. Its the last non VVT 3x00 motor that has interchangeable heads and intakes to the 3400's which are close to drop in engines for us.

On the topic of engine swaps, does a 3100 from a late model Beretta swap right up? Or is there as much work involved as a 3400? I'm guessing that the motor mounts could be different due to it being a different engine than the 2.8/3.1.

I'm tempted to take a battery to the junkyard near me and throw it in the 3100 Base they have (its all complete, has half a tank of gas even lol) and see how it runs and maybe buy the motor.

Also, if I were to go the 3100 route it seems that there is a decent amount of aftermarket for it. has anyone built a 3100 up before on here?

Plenty of people have worked the 3400s up. Its mostly the same as the 3100

Check prices of engines local to you at car-parts.com
If you have the option, get a 3500 (unless using A/C is important to you). If you can't find a cheap 3500, drop in a 3400. Go to 60degreev6.com and talk to superdave. He can burn a chip for your ecm to use the 3400. If you're going to go through the hassle of an engine swap, there's no reason to drop in a 3100. Also search "engine swap" on this forum and the 60degree forum. That'll help you see what you'll need to do.

3100 swap requirements are exactly the same as 3400 for your car.

If you like your 2.8 you are going to hate a 3100. I had a great love for my 3.1, but it needed to be rebuilt and have a cam. After the cars loss I went out after a 3100, found one and bought it. With a few mods I thought it would pep up, but it didn't.
I've heard good things about the 3400. That's about all I know of them.
