Anyone using a performance rad?

Post by 3400beretta »

So I've cracked two stock rads in the identical spot, and have been looking at aluminum rads at summit as a replacement.

Specifically the Griffin 1-25271-H

Anyone running an aluminum aftermarket rad? Any issues? From what I can tell that one should fit right in, and may even be able to utilize the stock mount setup. The only issue I can see, is that the inlet and outlet are not quite angled correctly, but I think it will still work ok.

Even with UPS shipping and taxes and duty and say even 10% exchange THAT thing is STILL less than I got nailed when the fan ate my rad in the middle of Northern Ontario!! List on the stock replacement was $347.00 for my Quad.

But why is it cracking? Rad support flex?

It is cracking because the dump pipe from the wastegate is rather close. The plastic is heating up and fatiguing. Clearly that is the weak spot since both rads have identical cracks, and Bman said his rad cracked in the same spot before too.

That being said, the rad is way too small for the car anyway and it definitely needs more cooling capacity.

Plastic should never be used on the cooling system. ROFL!!

I have no issues... then again I don't have a dump pipe right next to mine. But overall cooling capacity of whats there I don't have issues.

You also do not have 8 extra feet of exhaust piping and a turbo raising underhood temps.

The car definitely does not stay as cool as I'd like at the track.

No, but I do have headers which did up under hood temps. I wonder how much a larger radiator would help with that though... you still end up with overall under hood being way too high.

Do you have a turbo blanket? and what is the down-pipe coated or wrapped with? I think my ceramic coating on my headers made a huge difference this year since my steering boot is still in one piece.

Even though I'm NOT a fan of some mods, Lumina hood vents might be an idea, without the drip trays, when racing/driving.

Or a cowl hood or no hood or ??

I have a really good turbo blanket, and the up pipes are all wrapped in heat wrap.

I never did get around to doing the downpipe... one day.

Hood vents are an idea..

I think once I put the new rad in it will make a huge difference. I am already running a 160* stat, I just can't keep it at 160*.

I've mostly looked into getting some hood vents but I can never find any for sale before they get sold.. My other idea was go to the cowl hood (might be one reason you have less issues Jon). I kept a stock t-stat in mine and it usually stayed around 195-210 (as far as I can tell, my gauge isn't working super great anymore but while I data log it, the temps stay around there).

If u race with a turbocharged engine in a beretta I will suggest almost everything ppl have said here...my car could not cool for squat; I was advised to get a bigger core. That helped but quickly realized underhood temps got high quick; it is just way to cramped with turbo v6s...so I started to find ways to increase the pressure differential between the front of the core and the back...a larger CFM fan and hood vents was all I needed. Coating pipes help but do not last with a turbo...unfortunately you will probably have to keep doing it (not cost effective imo)

NB: A bigger radiator may not help also, if air simply just wants to go around it...

My engine gets hot fast and stays hot even with just a s/c setup.. I bought crappy 700cfm each dula fans and my engine would get hot anytime it sat in traffic for 5+mins, i just ordered 2 10in perma cool fans with 1450cfm each, hope they help in the future..
