Engine swap = quad4 to 3.1

Post by ryanwilson86 »

I am sure this has been done many times. But I looked all over didn't find my answer specifically.
I currently have a 1993 GTZ W/Quad(5SPD) & 1993 GT W/3.1(Auto). I was considering swapping the engines over to make a v6 5SPD, I was curious if I could use the same mounts between the two? I have read the trans is ok, strong enough for the swap? 8) What about fly wheel? Are they the same quad4 to v6? Lastly ecm will the 3.1 auto ecm work? I believe I still have a ecm for 89 grand prix 5spd if that would work better?

Quad has a different bellhousing IIRC.

where are you from? i could save you a lot of time and bull crap and give you a v6 bell housing, shift cables, clutch pedal, slave cylinder, and other parts and buy that 93 gtz from you, assuming it isnt a complete rust bucket.

From Canada. Rust free actually bought it two years ago, later found out he was also a member here it was u/ NASCAR something. It's Garnett red with Sunroof. We Honestly have been thinking about getting rid of both berettas. I just recently got rid of the third beretta, I kept all gtz ground effects and wheels, mtr & trans etc. Honestly the only thing keeping me from selling the Garnett one is I didn't want some kid to buy it and wreck it.

First of all, swapping a 3.1 in is a total waste of time. That is a lateral move from the quad, some would argue backwards.

If you are going to swap something in there, do a 3400. Tons of them out there, just as easy as a 3.1, and you can run it on a 3.1 ecm if you don't wanna tune. Yes all the mounts on the car are the same. But you must find 3100 mount brackets to bolt in the motor. You can modify most of the 3.1 brackets to work, but you'll for sure need the lower bracket that goes around the crankpulley. Rest of the parts needed can be sourced from your auto car. Quad flywheel is not the same as 3.1, but rockauto has them for $50. As stated before you also need to swap bellhousings if you want to use the quad transmission. I would not recommend this as you will still have the quad gearing (3.94 fdr) and with the new found torque of a V6 1st gear becomes utterly useless. But good luck finding a V6 getrag. My buddy scoured the junkyards in southern Ontario for 6 months and I'm pretty sure he got the last 2. (although some prick stole one of them from behind his buddy's shop so maybe its out there somewhere).

Where you located? If you sold the garnet car how much you want for it? PM me.

Pretty much what 3400beretta said, except that I disagree that a 3.1 would be a waste of time -I wouldn't bother trying to convince you one way or the other, but if you do go the 3400 route, be sure to replace the crappy GM plastic LIM gaskets with an upgraded steel & rubber set -Fel Pro, Dorman, and Victor Reinz all make them, I've used the Dorman set bought from Rock Auto and was very impressed with the quality and the price. Unfortunately, all three of those companies also still make the junk OEM-style plastic $#!t that will eventually fail and blow coolant into your oil-pan if the car is driven long enough. The 3.1 MPFI engine ('93 era) is a very solid engine, has no LIMG issues, is reliable and wonderfully torquey, and if you already have one that you know and trust, why not use it??

For the effort to 'swap bellhousings', I would just track-down a V-6 Getrag 282 tranny -although they seriously are getting hard to find, especially in good condition, which is one reason why I did my six-speed swap. You also need to retain the five-speed CVs of course. Your tach from the GTZ will not read correctly either with a V-6, so swap that over too. If you really want tobstart getting picky about it, I am not sure the GTZ's front springs will like the added weight of the V-6 as much as the GT's springs did, so you could even think about swapping those over too (I wouldn't bother, but I would actually just keep the Quad car a Quad car)... The 3.1 ECM will run mostly okay with the five-speed, but you may have some odd idling issues. I think the GP ECM might need to be re-pinned, but you may be able to just swap PROMs -if RobertIsar wants to join in on this he could answer those questions for certain. For the mounts, just go with a later-style 3100 setup if your GT's mounts aren't right (I don't recall off the top of my head which year they switched over to the newer style for the V-6s, I think it was '94 though, but you may be fine there if I am wrong).

Out of curiosity, what is your reasoning for wanting to ditch the Quad? The V-6 is torquier and generally more reliable with less maintenance, but it isn't as powerful either, and that is a lot of work to do to a car that you don't really sound like you are in love with. I personally want to swap-in a five-speed Quad setup into my '95 Z-26, even though the Quads are a bit more finicky about maintenance and such. I already live with a turbo Twin Cam (the successor to the Quad), so I know what I am dealing with, and I have several mods I figured out some time ago to help make the engine more reliable and less temperamental. Is yours basically okay, and would you want to sell it off? Or trade it for a V-6 Getrag? What part of Canada are you in -that is a big place after all.

PM SummitBalt08, he's done a similar swap and may be able to guide you in a good direction with this.
