My 91 GTZ

Post by Rob_91_GTZ »

Hey everyone,
I've been checking out the site for a long time but I decided that I should finally set up an account. I have owned my 91 GTZ quad 4 for the past 12 years but she's been sitting in the garage for the past 7 years. I restored most of the exterior and interior within the first 2 years. The car supposedly had a gm rebuilt motor put into it about 20k miles before I bought it so I figured it would last a long time. The motor lasted 15k easy miles over a period of about 4 years before it started knocking. Took it apart and found nothing but problems. Definitely not what a 35k gm rebuilt motor should have looked like. Block is already bored .050 over so I think it has reached the end of it's life. Pistons were scratched beyond belief on the tops with would look like a hand tool of some sort. Also had too much wear and scoring on the crankshaft. The body is still almost flawless since it was restored 11 years ago and looks like a brand new car. The car has not seen rain or snow since i've owned it. So, I'm finally looking to get a new motor into it and get her back on the road very soon. Does anyone have any recommendations of a good place or person to buy a Q4 HO from? I really want this motor to last so I can keep her on the road for a long time. I would love to get a W41 spec motor if possible. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thank You!

-Rob

Welcome.
I have a '91 GTZ up here in Canada I bought 8 years ago in California and drove back.
Still has original 71,000 miles on it and the original everything, including the clutch.
Had to paint it due to the primer failure most '91's had, but it's a nice survivor.
Paint cost a bunch taking all the glass and interior out of the car, and stripping everything, but it's perfect now.
Cheers

Very nice car! Keep it up, hope its going back on the road.
Quad4s can be pretty reliable once you have it rebuilt, and then treat and maintain them well.

Thanks guys. Glad to finally be a member on here. I loved driving this car and have babied it since the day I bought it. Previous owner(s) did not take great care of it and I found some truly ridiculous things which led me to gutting the . One example is that I took out a 6 foot piece of wiring that was made up from (6) 1-foot pieces and just twisted together and taped with duct tape. That led me to strip the entire interior besides the steering column which led me to other strange things which I fixed the right way. I wouldn't be surprised if they took the same care with the motor. And woody9gtz, I'd be lying if I said the thought hasn't crossed my mind. I just don't know what the overall cost and amount of custom parts that would be needed for it. Do you have an estimated rough cost of what it took for you to swap yours? And was your car originally a 3.1 or quad?

rob, if you decide you want to sell the car, hit me up, i'll buy it. i also have a ton of parts, i have a red 91 as well i just restored. dont swap it to a v6, its much easier to start with a v6 then to swap everything over, it can be done, but its not entirely practicle. i can help you out with getting a motor as well, im in north east pa, i can help you get a w41 motor but it wont come cheap and it needs a rebuild.
