Suspension Option CV Shaft

Post by acron »

Hello,
I am new to this.
I have a 88 Beretta and neither the local Chevy dealer nor the part stores can tell me which CV shafts (left and right) to buy.
Everybody says look at the sticker in the trunk, but it does not contain the information required.
Available at the parts stores are the following options
FE1 soft ride
FE3 Sport
FE7 Heavy Duty, started in 1990, so it can't be on my car
F41 Firm Ride and Handling
My VIN is 1G1LV11WOJY286225 and the code goes D35 F75 J50, no other information about F... options.
Any idea on how to get the right parts
Thank you

CV shaft should have no association to the type of suspension you have. They should only be specific to manual or automatic transmission.

Check on RockAuto.

Try this:
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web/P ... rom=header

When you open that link, input your car information: 1988 Chevrolet Beretta ... (And pick the engine that you have) ... etc ...

Then open up the different axle listings in new tabs in your browser (right click open in new tab) and see which ones say for which transmission (Find the ones for your trans, it is either auto or manual) and see if it is for the driver or the passenger side.

There are different brands, you can also try looking on O'Riley Auto Parts and Autozone websites as well if you prefer, Summit Racing's web sit may also have ones you can buy, also try Rock Auto.

I hope this helps.

Hallo,
thank you both for your reply.
Advanced Auto does not differentiate between the suspension options.
Rockauto, Napa and O'Reilly do. They list the options and even the different length.
The car I am planning to repair is not in the US, so taking the parts out and showing them to the parts store is not an option.
Neither is buying some parts and returning them.
So if anybody has any ideas how to find the correct spare part I would appreciate it.
Maybe it is only a wild goose chase.
Thank you

Hello,
I looked through the page from Advanced Autoparts.
When you select the manufacturer Heri they also differentiate the FE3 and FE7 option with different length.
Again none of the options show up on the sticker in the trunk.
Thank you

As long as your sway bar has not been changed, that will tell you FE7 vs FE3. FE3 front will be 30mm with end links attached to the control arm and FE7 is 17mm with end links attached to the strut or knuckle. FE1 would be less than 30mm and attached to the control arm.

Hope this helps.

Yah, FE1, FE2, FE3, FE7 refer to the swaybar and springs, possibly shocks and rear swaybar on select models.

It doesn't refer to the axles at all as far as I know.

The winner is woody90gtz.
Even though the FE... refers to the suspension, it seems to have an impact on the CV shafts. I am sure the parts suppliers do not differentiate these without a reason.
The swaybar on my car measures 30 mm. Due to the year it can only be the FE3.
I want to thank everybody for their help and of to the parts store I go.

I've never see differences for that, maybe some suppliers mention it so they can charge more? idk. lol
I do remember some members saying the replacement axles (the shaft in the middle) were not as thick as the factory ones.

The only length difference I see is 5/32" shorter on a FE1 and up axle vs a longer FE3 version... I have NO clue on why the FE1 style would be any shorter than the FE3 and up and the fact that its only a 5/32" shorter just makes me believe that it's just a bunch of BS and doesn't really matter.
