(Decipha @ Jul. 11 2006,14:39)QUOTEhatemyauto... i've been told the 3.1 and 3100 engines have completely different sounds and i know this from the 5.0 ford and 5.0 gm engines, they are very distinctive even with straight pipes, as for the borla turbo... i was really interested in the flowtech terminator... i've been told by a very reliable source that it sounds incredible on the 3100s does any know to back this up?
3.1MPfi and the 3100Sfi HAVE the same sound when pipeless, I have a 96 Lumina that I JUST replaced the muffler and resonator, the only difference between them is one has the resonator and one doesn't on the exhaust, take the res off, and it's a cackling SOB like it's 3.1MPFI conterpart...

As far as the 5.0 Ford, and the 5.0 GM, Ford is a 302, and GM is a 305, and the reason they sound different, is the FIREING order, and stroke, GM is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, and I can't remember what Ford's is, but the order is different, yeilding a totally different sound........

Most 60°V6s sound about the same regardless of the manufacturer actually.  I myself kinda like the raw, raspy sound of the V6s.  The firing order on a GM and a Ford will be radically different because they number their cylinders differently (eg. GM will have 1-3-5-7 in one bank, yet a ford will have 1-2-3-4).  And BTW. GM did make quite a monster of a 302ci V8 back in the day, so a 302 could possibly be a GM engine too.

I had a few different straightpipe exhaust systems on the 3100, including dual rear outlet, dual side outlet, and a single side outlet.

Here's a couple of videos of the single side outlet. This is catless, mufflerless 2.25" that exits just in front of the rear driver's side tire.

The GM 302 only lasted one year production: 1969.  It was a very unreliable motor, but fairly peppy.  They do not follow the same firing order as your average sbc.  Parts can be a real pain in the *** to find, while other parts of it are commom with a 307.

Actually, the 302 was made for 3 years. ÂÂÂ It was just a conglomeration of parts from the other small block engines (283 stroke, 327 bore, etc..)  Also, as far is I could see, it still has a 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 firing order.

1967 - 602
1968 - 7,199
1969 - 19,014

I'd love to get a RS/Z28 some day, but they're quite pricey.

Yeah, the Chevy 302 was designed for the z28 Camaro as a direct competitor for the Boss 302 in Trans Am racing, which had a 305 cubic inch displacement limit.

My dad actually had one of them in a 1966 Chevy Van, because the z28 it was in had the rear end demolished in a wreck... they were a very stout little high revving engine.

I suppose I sould say hi to everone since this is my first post. I'm new to the site but not to automotive stuff. I've have had a beretta for about 5 years now as my DD. My real passion is early broncos, but I'd like to improve my beretta as well.

Anyway I'll stop hyjacking the thread now.
I replaced my muffler with 2-1/4" pipes from the resonator back with a "Y" out to duals and no muffler.
Sounds pretty burly but the hum inside can get annoying on long drives.
The best part was, right after I did it I took a cross country trip and averaged 34mpg at 70-80mph! I was happy.
