Re: Nukkinfuttz Turbo GTZ
Well, I got the engine out, and then broke it down to full parade rest... Here is a shot of the piston, there is a monster hole right through the oil control ring. ouch. there was some aluminum transfer to the cylendar wall, so, I am going to take the block to a shop today to see if it can be cleaned up, or if I have to overbore. That will dictate what pistons to order. Im gonna go with wiseco this time, I like thier new piston design.

I was gonna say Great Stuff foam, but JB weld might work too.

Re: Nukkinfuttz Turbo GTZ
Check this out.
I pulled the pistons off of the rods today, and did inspected the head and block more closely to determine the extent of failure here. Im amaized.
The head looks good. I will reuse it with no problems.
The block is probably a total loss. the depth of some marks and the total surface area that is affected, I think its just best to chunk it, and start over with a fresh block.
The rod that was attached to the melted piston had some trouble. It looks like when the hole formed in the side of the piston, molten aluminum was shot all over the top of the rod. unfortunately, this blinded some oiling holes that let engine oil get applied to the wrist pin bushings. Well, since they were blinded, the bushing spun inside of the rod, and completely covered the oiling holes. At this point, the bushing is wiped out and needs to be replaced. The rest of the rod should be okay.
But now the best part. As I was taking the locks out of the last piston, a piston that by all outward appearances looked just fine, a large chunk of ring land just falls out!!! Look for yourself, this piston doesnt show any marks that would cause a ring land to break out, it just fell the gently caress out. I layed the broken off piece on top of the piston skirt near where it came from to help your eye pick it out.
I wonder if this is what happened to my melted piston??? Just imagine if a piece of that piston breaks off, but stays trapped inside of the rings. Its going to overheat becuase it has no where to conduct heat away from itself anymore. I belt it would totally melt down and then compromise the rings, and ultimately leave you with a melted piston, like my really bad one. My bad one is missing this piece of land completely, and it is missing in exactly the same spot!
I think ROSS is junk.

I would put a call into their QA department. That looks like a casting flaw.

Man. That's the final straw for me. Between Racin's problems with Ross Pistons, others, and now you. I'm DEF not ordering them for the Quasar for this winter's high compression build. Believe I'll go the Diamond route.

May be 20PSI of casting flaw too....Chad91GTZ wrote:I would put a call into their QA department. That looks like a casting flaw.

A lot of factors are derivable from the subjective endurance that engine sustained. However, from what I've seen and experienced with ROSS pistons, my money is going elsewhere.

Oh I'm not denying that Ross is Crap, but I'm sure 20PSI is quite a bit to hold on to.1988GTU wrote:A lot of factors are derivable from the subjective endurance that engine sustained. However, from what I've seen and experienced with ROSS pistons, my money is going elsewhere.
Re: Nukkinfuttz Turbo GTZ
There's too many variables to say what's safe and what's not. My friend is running 20 psi on cast pistons in his vw and it has been holding up(knock on wood)

Re: Nukkinfuttz Turbo GTZ
I'll be running 20PSI on my Subaru soon too... I doubt those are forged... But the biggest difference is what is your starting compression?
Re: Nukkinfuttz Turbo GTZ
20 PSI is not low by any means, however, I'd be more inclined to suspect the RPM's that has been/being achieved over PSI.3X00-Modified wrote:Oh I'm not denying that Ross is Crap, but I'm sure 20PSI is quite a bit to hold on to.1988GTU wrote:A lot of factors are derivable from the subjective endurance that engine sustained.
