Transmission cooler
Transmission cooler
Hi - didn't want to ressurrect an old thread so i started this 1.I have a 94 3100 with the 4 speed 4T60E tranny.Having been burnt twice through the years on other cars with a radiator developing an internal leak and dumping coolant into the tranny and thus losing a transmission,i decided to install a Hayden # 516 auxillary Tranny cooler and to eliminate the radiator cooler altogether.I have a good friend in the tranny repair business who does the local state troopers vehicles and he always eliminates the radiator cooler when installing an auxillary cooler and swears that he cooling will actually be better by doing so,plus all the info I could find online says to do so as well in warm climates .they say to run it in series with the radiator in very cold climates to help in warm- up.
Problem and a question......After installing this cooler i noticed that the paper packed with it by Hayden says to run inline with the radiator for optimal cooling. Now i am worried. Is my set-up,by-passing the radiator , going to keep the transmission cooled safely even in city traffic ?

Re: Transmission cooler
You'll likely be fine.
The cooler you installed is probably bigger than the tiny one in the rad anyway.
I have done it both ways on myriad vehicles and there really is no wrong way.
What is the GVW for the cooler you installed? It's onthe package someplace.

Re: Transmission cooler
Running the aftermarket cooler seperate will actually make it run cooler in most cases, because no engine coolant heat is being transfered.
Sitting in traffic it potentially could get a little warm with no cooling fan but i doubt this is an issue at all.

Re: Transmission cooler
My 95 runs really cool. Below 185 all the time... that has both the stock and then an aftermarket cooler hooked up... IIRC it goes from the trans to the aftermarket one then the stock one... and this car has a 195* thermo.
The 96 however is just the aftermarket cooler... That runs a little hotter than I would like to see sometimes, but I'm not sure if thats due to a increased line pressure since my modulator sees less vac on a regular basis due to my cam, and I might have it adjusted higher than the 95. I'm going to try running the stock cooler first then the aftermarket one then back to the trans on this car and see how the temps fair then. Although if I'm just running on the street the temps stay around 188 which is ideal.

thanks guys--anyone thing an extra fan would be worth the price for this? Thanks foer the replies guys--i had already left the car at my tranny guys shop -he said he feels it's most likely fine ,but will make a few calls and take a close look at it in it's turn.Hopefully soon... as the windows are up--thank heavens i use lots of sunshades.
Anyways--Asylum,Hayden does not list Gvw's anywhere ,not on box.not on any papers packed with it,and their customer reps don't have them....;but the online application guide for the 516 lists it as the heavy duty option for many full sized v8 powered cars stretching back to the 60's ,including the 96 Impala SS as well as full size trucks and even the class A Motorhome, all of which outweigh the Beretta by a good margin.
A couple follow-ups--cold weather highway driving -any issues installed this way ,do you you think?
And if the next one needs a new thread-- mods--just tell me and i will do so.....I was planning a drain plug installation anyways, does anyone know if the pan located temperature guages sender can be used as a drain plug ,or made part of a drain plug? I would like to put in a temp guage in the near future as well.
Thanks again for the replies.

Re: Transmission cooler
Just got the car back and transmission man says the cooler is extremely large for the car and he foresees no trouble whatever-even in Nashville traffic in 2 weeks--which is where i will be.Said he will do a temp check this winter during warm-up and such as a courtesy and precaution-but fore-sees no issues relating to cold weather. He said at that point if an issue was present he would install a cooler that he knows has a cold-temp bypass. His supplier looked this model up through other channels i am not privy to i guess and said it has the cold-temp by-pass,but i can't get Hayden to verify this and he and i are both a bit skeptical that it does.--Although he said he doesn't feel it will be any problem anyway---this from a man who turned down the oppotunity today to charge me over a hundred to install one of his own.Total cost----0 dollars. It's the reason why i refer people his way when transmissions woes arise. An honest man.
