belt acting funny... i need some help...

now i have a 88gt with a 3.1L out of a 92 buick regal.. now i dont know what size alt. it should have but the alt. went out and i put another junk yard one on it.. i know there is 2 sizes of them and there are 2 sizes of belts.. i got the bigger of the 2 belts and sometimes when i start the car it squels really bad and when i rev the motor up it it doesnt quit... it only stops after like 5 mins or when i put some pb blaster on it... its driving me insane...any help is greatly appreciated...

How much play is in the belt?

The tensioner can only take up so much.

i got about a half an inch of play up and down... so should i get the smaller belt...

Yeah I smaller belt should do the trick. My belt is very tight

Also, make sure you have a new or fairly good tensioner. It should be difficult to move it by hand without tools, but if in doubt, replace it. Its cheap.

i got the new belt on and it works great... i had to go with the shorter belt... the tensioner seems good to me but im no mechanic...

yea i live in mansfield ohio so its like a couple hours from pa so idk yet...
