Re: successful 3900?
There was a guy on 60*V6 talking about it a while back.
Have a look over there perhaps.
I know the variable valve timing and the camshaft are issues.

Re: successful 3900?
I "believe" the only person who has swapped in a 3900 is a fiero guy on 60*v6. Maybe a j-body guy, I don't remember though. Asylum is right though, getting it in isn't the issue, its running it because our ecu's aren't even a bit capable of running it

Re: successful 3900?
What computer are they using? I think I heard megasquirt has a standalone for vvt. But I know haltech can run it for sure.
Re: successful 3900?
the OBD1 ecu can run it. you have to block the cam phaser and you have to use a non variable runner intake. You have to reground a cam too so you can use more power from the engine ( mainly because of the locked cam-phaser.) And you need the basics from the 3500 swap ( crank trigger, throttle body adapter etc.) Very doable swap but worth it? maybe because of the higher displacement it would be good for 300+ HP NA
ill stick with the 3500....for now...

Re: successful 3900?
No he just means that someone has made an OBDI ecm run it... If OBDI can do it OBDII can... But OBDI.5 can ONLY run a 3100 and 3400 safely since you can not tune it at all. You just need a tunable solution.
But as noted all of the perks of the 3900 if you ask me are disabled to get it to run on an older computer system... Its like cutting twcylindersrs off a v8 to make it fit and swap that in your car, seems counter productive.

Re: successful 3900?
Well I remember somewhere that Joseph Upson said that the cam phasing was only for fuel economy, and that by locking it, He made more HP (surely on the regrind.) when I think about it the Cam phasing can only do so little on a Push rod engine.
that engine should be making more then 240HP if the 3500 is capable of 200. the 3.9 do get its torque Lower and longer then the 3500.

Re: successful 3900?
LX9
The LX9 3500 is an OHV engine based on the 3400 V6. It incorporates electronic throttle control. Bore is 94 mm (3.7 in), stroke is 84 mm (3.3 in) for a displacement of 3498 cc (213 cu in). A GM Press Release for the 2004 Malibu described the 3500 thus: "3.5-liter V-6, will debut in the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu. The engine offers improved performance and fuel efficiency, and runs smoother and quieter than earlier generation V-6 engines. The 3500 V-6 features an advanced powertrain control module, improved fuel injection system, a redesigned exhaust manifold and a new catalytic converter contribute to reduced emissions, as well as improved efficiency and performance characteristics. Improvements in cooling, sealing and the accessory drive system add to the engine's overall quality, reliability and durability." Power output ranges from 196 hp (146 kW) to 201 hp (150 kW), torque ranges from 213 lb·ft (289 N·m) to 221 lb·ft (300 N·m).
It was used in the following vehicles and model years:
2005–2006 Buick Terraza/Chevrolet Uplander/Pontiac Montana/Saturn Relay
2004–2006 Chevrolet Malibu/Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
2005–2006 Pontiac G6 Sedan / Coupe
2006–2007 Buick Rendezvous
2006 Pontiac G6 GT Convertible
LZ4
The LZ4 3500 is an OHV engine based on the 3.9 L LZ9 V6. It was introduced for the 2006 model year in the Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo. It includes continuously variable cam timing (fixed overlap). It has a cast iron block and aluminum heads. Output is 211 hp (156.5 kW) at 5800 rpm and 214 ft·lbf (298 N·m) at 4000 rpm. Bore is 99 mm (3.9 in), stroke is 76 mm (3.0 in) for a displacement of 3510 cc. Horsepower rating changed for the 2007 model year to 224 hp at 5800 rpm and 220 ft-lb torque at 4000 rpm. The Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6, and Saturn Aura became equipped with this engine for 2007 (previously the Malibu and G6 had the non-VVT 201 hp (150 kW) 3.5 L LX9). In 2008 SAE ratings dropped the horsepower ratings to 219, keeping torque as is. On Pontiac G6 convertible models, horsepower was rated at 217.
Applications:
2006–2009 Chevrolet Impala
2006–2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
2007–2010 Chevrolet Malibu/Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
2007–2009 Saturn Aura
2007–2009 Pontiac G6
2008–2009 Saturn Vue XE AWD (222 hp/220 lb-ft)
Note: GM often refers to this engine in its literature as a "3.5L V6 with Variable Valve Timing".
LZE
The LZE 3500 is an OHV flexible fuel engine based on the 3.9 L LZ9 V6 (it can use either plain gasoline or 85% Ethanol, E85) and includes continuously variable cam timing (fixed overlap). It has a cast iron block and aluminum heads. Bore is 99 mm (3.9 in), stroke is 76 mm (3.0 in) for a displacement of 3510 cc (214 cu in). Output is 211 hp (156.5 kW) at 5800 rpm and 214 lb·ft (290 N·m) at 4000 rpm.
Output for model year 2007 is upped to 224 hp (167 kW) at 5800 rpm and torque of 220 lb·ft (298 N·m) at 4000 rpm.
Applications:
2006–2011 Chevrolet Impala
2006–2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
These engines should not be confused with the LX5 "Shortstar" DOHC V6 used in the Oldsmobile Intrigue from 1999-2002, which also displaced 3.5 L.
3.9
Bore is increased to 99 mm (3.9 in) and stroke is increased to 84 mm (3.31 in) for a displacement of 3880 cc (237 cu in).
LZ9
The new LZ9 3900 features Variable Cam Timing, a new feature on a pushrod engine, roller rocker arms and has a variable length intake manifold. The dual intake runners (One short, one longer) improves intake efficiency across a broader RPM range.
It produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 240 ft·lbf (332 Nm) torque, with a wide torque curve. 90% of the torque is available from 1500 rpm to 5500 rpm. Applications:
2006 Pontiac G6 GTP Sedan / Coupe / Convertible
2007 Pontiac G6 GT Sport Package Sedan / Coupe
2007–2009 Pontiac G6 GT Sport Package Convertible
2006–2007 Chevrolet Malibu SS
2006 Chevrolet Impala/Monte Carlo
2006–2009 Buick Terraza/Chevrolet Uplander/Pontiac Montana/Saturn Relay
2009–present Buick Lucerne
LZ8
The LZ8 3900 has the same Variable Cam Timing technology as the LZ9. The 2007 model year introduces the Active Fuel Management system (formerly known as Displacement on Demand), which can turn off a bank of cylinders under a light load for increased fuel economy. Output is slightly lower than the LZ9 at 233 hp (174 kW) and 240 ft·lbf (332 N·m).
This engine is used in the following vehicles:
2007–2008 Chevrolet Impala
LGD
The LGD 3900 is a flexible fuel version of the LZ9, and like its 3.5 L counterpart the LZE, it can run on E85, pure gasoline or any mixture of the two. Output is identical to the LZ9.
2007–2009 Buick Terraza/Chevrolet Uplander/Pontiac Montana
