Re: First post from my new house!
This weekend I removed the stupid storage compartment from the side wall and started turning it into a work bench along the back wall. Gives me a lot more room from side to side. Tiff's brother also picked up his crotch rocket so that helps too. Ran 50' of 10-4 wire from the electrical box to the corner of the garage for a 220V outlet for the compressor & welder...so I should be able to have my Beretta exhaust all welded up before next weekend. Also picked up some plywood & pegboard to get the organizational process started.
Got a letter in the mail from IRS telling me I should have my rebate in a couple weeks! So then it will be time for insulation too.

Re: First post from my new house!
Here are some more project pics. It's still a little cluttered since I'm already out of storage space, and I think I'd like to enclose the shelving under the bench for a cleaner look with less dust. I still have to run wiring for my fluorescents, but when that is done I'll be throwing some drywall & R40 on the ceiling.
But the air lines and workbench are pretty much done. I modified the regulator and the placement of the lubricator, etc so I'll have one clean dry air line on the j-hook, and one lubed line on the hose reel for my air tools. Also made a sturdy home for the vice. I painted my old old Stanley toolboxes to match my new Craftsman ones and hit the lumber with flat black and the cast iron pipe with Rustoleum Hammered gray. My graphic design background makes me a little too detail-oriented at times. haha

That drier and lubricator is an awesome idea... I need to think about getting one of those maybe. Shop's coming along well, but just wait, once you start working on things its never that clean again... LOL Remember how clean mine was when I started on my car in Jan... its a wreck now. I need to take a weekend and just clean the whole area.

Re: First post from my new house!
Once I have everything organized it shouldn't be too tough to keep clean. It will look cleaner once the drywall is up too.

That's what we all think... but trust me. Other projects get in the way of finishing up what you started and that will happen 5 times during the week till your bench is loaded with crap and the first thing you started is shoved all the way to the back... I didn't think it would either, but yeah... It happens.

Re: First post from my new house!
Here are a few progress pics. Got the receptacles wired for the fluorescents - checked them and they work good. Bought 20 sheets of drywall and enough R30 for the ceiling so we're in business. I planned to be further along by now, but I found out the hard way the garage isn't square or exactly 24 on center...

Re: First post from my new house!
if you want to do it right.
you are missing the 'furing' 1x 3 that goes 90 deg to the roof trusses, and if you intend to insulate the attic/roof, you need to install a 6mm or thicker vapour barrier.
the electricial wire insulation (yellow in this case) , must be skinned no longer then 1/4 inch after it enters the box(wire clamp) and the ground first goes on the box grount then to the device(in 1 peace), you will need 6 inches of white and black wire, but 7 inches of ground.

Re: First post from my new house!
Hey Paul, thanks for the info. I did a little research and read that furring strips are not needed with drywall and 24 on center trusses, and the insulation I have has a vapor barrier on it.
The plastic boxes dont need a ground either, but I'm close with how much insulation I took off the 12-2. Once the receptacle is installed there are no live wires outside the box at all, just the ground. I'll try to remember to snap a pic with them fully installed.

AND Don't forget to wrap the wire around the terminal screw in a clockwise fashion. That way when you tighten the screw, it pulls the wire tighter, rather than pushing it out from under the screw.Red_Bra_Black_GTZ wrote:if you want to do it right.

Re: First post from my new house!
Ah, that makes sense. Never thought about the way to wrap the wire around the terminal.
Last night I got another row on the ceiling and insulated everything that is up. The batt is a tight fit between the trusses and doesn't slide worth a crap...this whole project has been more of a PITA than I was expecting.

You never did say you were a carpenter, or a finish man... so i could only assume this was going to be PITA
IF I have money this winter, I may start buying the foam I want to use to insulate my garage...
I also need to add a few more electrical sockets... I find myself searching for some the more I use the garage.
