Interesting. Technically they shouldn't, but maybe they enhance the back sound enough to make it sound better. Or that they are better than nothing... lol
Like I said, guessing on what they look like.

Makes me want to go see if my 88 parts car still has them, then throw em on the GT for reference.

Jon is right; Cliff's car has the boxes, and some Kicker 6x9's (which I now have a duplicate set).
His car hits just as hard, or damn close to it, as my 12" Alpine in a sealed box (a cubic foot box for reference

)
I want my trunk space back, and the box just takes up too much space. Not an ideal road trip car IMHO.
So if this works like I hope it will, I'll have more trunk space, and a comparable bass hit.

They formed a "box" of sorts, but I always thought the trunk space gave the speakers better acoustics, as you have more of a resonating chamber using the trunk, vs the tiny space the boxes give, or are you wanting them for some other reason? Looks?
Definitely not.. They're actually a plastic box. In the '88s, the speaker would attach to the box, then the box would attach to the deck. They have a seal between the box and the deck as well.

Ah, big difference. That would help some yes, because the material was firmer. Thanks for the clarification.
