I've never heard that before. V6's never got that kind of gearing, and as far as I know 92+ Quads were all the same as well.

The 5spd I got from Boner was from a 90 quad with the 0.8:1 5th. And according to that list all 92+ Quad Berettas would be the same since W41 was not offered in an L-body.
I got the list from J-body forum, so I can't tell you how accurate it is...but I do know my 90 GTZ turned more revs at 75 than my v6 does. 3200 sounds about right.

The gear change that your stating would only put the Quad at 2800 if you turn 2600 in the V6 and the final drive was the same. .72 to .8 is only a 1.11 change, 2600*1.11 is 2888
Either way the only way to find out is to have him check it, and still for that price you could swap gears out if you wanted to.
If not use it for the parts to repair yours... But you still don't know whats wrong with it either.

I did some more research and I stand corrected.
There is a ton of good V6/Quad Getrag info in this thread!

I just plugged in the calculator and 75mph is 2624rpm with a .72 5th and 3.61fdr with 225/45/17.
75mph is 2963 with a .81/3.61 205/55/16. (2952 with 225/45/17).
Interestingly enough .81/3.94 comes to 3222rpm.
So if 3200@78 is accurate, this must be a 3.94 trans.

And BTW, if I picked up this trans it would be my second spare...I've been getrag hoarding. muhahahahaha
