Ok so the guy I work for is selling me a 3400 out of a 2000 grand am..I'm wanting to use the 3 speed auto that's already in my car so what will it take to do this? I have a buddy that can get me the engine harness from a base v6 so all I need to know is if this is going to go as smoothly as I want and what am I going to need to change on my car to make this work?

Ugh... The only advice I can give on that post is if you're going to keep your 3 speed auto, then keep your 2.2 as well...

If you build the 3speed a little and not go overboard and use blue plate clutches it will be fine. You just need to know what your doing. How many people have told me my 4t60e wouldn't handle the power and I have yet to cook any of the clutch packs.

Eric had good luck with his 3t40 and put down mid 13sec times, it was geared very aggressive and also setup to shift aggressive but if he doesn't go that far I think he'll be fine.

Hell if I went off of Slinky's experience with a 4t60e I wouldn't want to build one, he's overheating it left and right, yet with my build I just drove to work this AM and my trans peaked at 160*. What I'm trying to say is try it and see what happens, if you do it right it will most likely be fine.

I may be wrong, but I don't know what will be involved upgrading the 2.2 to a 3400/4t60e..... I would suspect ECM, harness, etc.... Any way other than a direct swap out may be a challenge. lol

He's looking at a harness either way he goes, 3400/4t60e or 3400/3t40,

I'm not sure what year he's starting with but unless he's got a 96 harness lined up for the 3400/4t60e is not worth it, 94-95 he will get stuck in that no tuning, If he goes with the 3400/3t40 he would be using a 93 and older v6 harness and be able to purchase a tune from WOT-Tech or tune it on his own.

Honestly, who on this site has a 3400/3t40 combo... I don't think anyone does. I've always wondered what it can do over the heavier 4t60e.

It would be very hard to find a good 3.1L, but at least that computer is set up to run the 3T40. Still you are left with a harness and computer change. More or less the same as a 3400. The less could be mounts.
Too bad you don't have the money for an aftermarket controler. That would solve two problems(tune and trans).

how about the Harness that WOT-TECH sells for "downgrading" the obd 1.5 to obd? It can even work with 4t60-e

If you already have to do a full harness swap, why would you buy a 94-95 harness then by another harness to adapt to an older ECU... seems like too much money involved.

Also I tried this A-body swap a long time ago I never got it to run right and abandoned the project, I've never heard of anyone else running it 100% vs what I did. I just modified a 96 engine by harness to work with my 95 interior harness and convert it to OBDII. It was a one night swap and the whole thing was running like it should.

But either way since he's a 2.2 he has to do a full engine bay harness already, so he might as well pick the on he wants to go to, OBDI or OBDII and just avoid OBDI.5 all together.

Yes, no one has had a 3400 3t40... And Eric's car was far from streetable... He didn't even have a sway bar and the thing shifted at 4500 RPM under part throttle... Not ideal.

I'd like to see what a 3400 3t40 can do vs a 3400 4t60e since there are times on that... 14.9 being the fastest out there that I know of... and Woody got that.

I don't thing I'll be able to make that trans work...its got a cable that assists in the shifting and there isn't a spot on the 3400 tb for the cable...also since this is out of a 2000 grand am the motor mount setup is kinda different so what do I do?

sSo you've obviously never looked into how people put a 3400 in a beretta... All the 3400 engines we use are from W or N bodies and don't have the same motor mounts.

The motor mount setups are all over this board depending on what year car you have, You have YET to specify that or even post a picture of what you have so we can't help you much yet... Also the trans cable can be adapted by using a Quad 4 throttle box, people have done it, As noted Eric was running a 3500 3t40 so it's possible.

If your letting the engine motor mount differences stop you this quickly I don't understand how you thought you could take on a 3800SC swap... that takes fully custom mounts where the 3400 you just need to pick and choose the right stock ones that will work.

Graphix had the red fx body kit 92 GT 3400 swapped with the stock auto trans. I don't know if he ever took it down the drag strip though.
