Well...they're not on yet! haha

Been doing some header coating research...TechLine (that Jon uses), Jet-Hot, Airborne, NitroPlate...and a place in NY that does the TechLine CermaKrome are all possibilities. Doing it myself would save some money, but the estimate for most places is $200 for v6 headers...which might be worth it to save myself the hassle AND get a warranty on the finish.

You want a warranty on the finish of your headers but opted to do your paint job yourself? And your looking at something that is chrome? Who are you?

I don't have the time to send someone my headers and have them done, its like a 2 week turn around from some places and I never have them ready when I have the time. So I would rather just do it myself.

hahaha

The place in NY raves about their quick turnaround times on their website...but they haven't even called me back yet, so that's not a good sign.

I'm trying to save some of my own time since I'm spread so thin...

I just bought a new mini gravity feed gun to do mine since I was not that happy with the result I got doing my Subaru headers with the turbo x blue coating... I may strip them and redo them since they are that bad if you ask me... The up pipe came out good and I'm gonna do the down with this new gun.

Also regarding the finish I had on the colorguard stainless... I never actually polished that after it was baked on so I'm sure that has something to do with why it was dull all the time.

So you're letting the coating air dry and then installing them on the car for the full cure, right? Installing them without scratching the final cure coating is one of the things that has me worried about doing it myself.

Correct since I do not have a spare oven to bake them in, but yes I agree 100% that the scratch factor is what makes it a bit of pain in the ass... But I did ok with the first set and now I know the angles I have to do to get them in without hitting anything... As well as the order of when to install stuff. Plus with my new V-band clamp that will go together MUCH easier too.

You can final bake in an oven if you have one... probably would result in a better finish as well. Thats why this time I just went with cast iron and then the gloss cover coat that should also heat shield a bit more... with out the "chrome" or reflective finish then its easier to cover up minor screw ups.

I may hang them 2" above my wood stove and crank the crap out of it for an hour or so and that should help set the paint some more... LOL

We have an oven at work, but getting them to the oven without screwing them up could be tough. Unless I brought my HVLP touch up gun to work and put them in the oven straight from there. We don't have a paint booth, but the powdercoat hood might work to spray them in.

Just bought a couple discontinued detent covers to have on hand from "ManTrans." They don't sell automatic stuff...that's what their sister company "GirlTrans" is for!

Oh, and the Jet-Hot quote I got back was over $300! Yeah right! hahahaha

Now your seeing why I went DIY ;)

I was waiting to hear your quote because I got one a while ago and it's what convinced me to do it myself and I just couldn't remember the price tag.

Yeah...I've already got a HVLP touch up gun that came in the kit with the full size gun. I can probably get away with spraying them and then throwing them in the oven at work. Not looking forward to stripping the current coating though...that was well worth the $50 strip fee I saw at a couple places. haha

Talked to the local place and their coating service would be 225-250 with a warranty and free stripping of the old coating. That's awful tempting...

I was thinking about buying the DIY stuff and using the leftover to coat my intake pipes, but I don't know how I would cure it. The oven at work only goes to 550 and I know the final cure takes place at a higher temp than that.

Don't get the exhaust coating, get the IC-1 specialty Insulating coating. It air dries, no baking necessary. Do just the intake pipes if you dont want to do the headers.
