Blown Up GTZ

I just found out my '90 GTZ needs a new engine as this one has evidently expired according to my mechanic. I can get a remanufactured  one installed for $3700 (including the new engine). What other options do I have other than finding a used motor? - which there aren't any within 50 miles, as he has called around.

thanks

Is it a quad4 or a 3.1?

Way better than "calling around".

And check with your GM Dealer.

I'm pretty sure re-manned Quads can be had for less than that!

There is also Jasper Engines and any number of places that sell rebuilt engines.

Much as I hate to suggest it, Mantapart has some great deals on Quads, JUST BE VERY CAREFUL!

Good products for the most part, but his service is horrendous.

2.3L since it's a 90Z.

QUOTE installed for $3700
Not that bad as long as it comes with a good warranty.

I would do a fine SEARCH on Mantapart/Mantacrap.

whats your mechanic mean by "expired"? does the thing still run and drive great without any problems such as headgasket or something?

this is a jasper engine right? if the car is in great shape and you are attached and dont have the mechanical knowhow yourself go for it. 3700 gets you the motor, installed, and a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty.

Keep an eye on Ebay. I've seen several NEW and Remans go through there for 1G or less shipped. Also check with the http://www.quad4forums.com/forums/index.php? guys. They are Quad crazy over there and there are a few guys selling Quads for a good price. Even if you had to rebuild one it would cost you less than half what your wrench is charging you. He's ripping you off. Get a new mechanic.  GL.

you are forgetting the price includes labor and you are getting an motor with a 3 year warranty. its right on the mark with the price.  drop the broken car off have it turn key ready when its fixed. if the motor does break under warranty, you get to take it back to the shop that you got the work done. plus this is a remanufactured engine which is a lot better then having a shop rebuild a blown motor.

Exactly. Labor. That's where the big money is. Do it yourself and save thousands. Warranties for the most part are a waste of time. They have 1001 ways out of honoring them anymore and they utilize them. Also, he's still ripping you off. Should cost you no more than $2500 installed. And IF you let him do it, GET the receipt for the reman/brand new motor to make sure he didn't drop in a JY motor and charge you new price!
