It will benefit a turbo or very high compression N/A engine (I'm talkin 13:1 or more) because race gas will resist knock. Thus you can run more boost or advance the timing and create more power.

Stock motors do not need it because they are designed not to knock (at least not much) on standard pump gas.

MY GTO is stock but has to run premium fuel with 93 or better octane rating. But then again It does run 11:1 compression stock
MY blazer too will ping if I use regular unleaded but that is because I pull a trailer with it. To be honest anything with over 10:1 compression will have problems on todays fuel unless running some sort of alcohol injection or octane booster-(alcohol injection works better ). MY GTO with 93 octane fuel can be run wuth the timing set at stock 6 BTDC. anything over that and it is an animal, but pings like a b!tch.
