When I stopped for gas tonight I got a bottle of Gum-Out Fuel Injector Cleanor, whenever I'm home I fill out of my parents gas barrell, that gas is regular unleaded (87 octane) and it has normally been around for awhile. I dumped it in and got back on the road. About 70 miles down the road I thought the crap should of made a difference by now if it was going to make a difference at all. So at about 65 miles an hour I floored it and put it in "L" to get into second. Then I slid it to "D" right after. It shifted into 3rd at 88-89 mph, normally it shifts at 84-85. The engine sounded smoother at higher rpm's.

I didn't think the stuff was going to do that much, if at all. But my injectors could of been dirty from burning old fuel from home.

My question, isn't gas a good enough cleaner itself? I've used gas before for cleaning various engine parts and paint brushes, and it works great for that. You'd think it would keep the injectors clean.

Yeah but gasoline itself isnt all that clean.  If you ever replace a fuel filter on any vehicle, dump it out with the flow for a sec and see how clear it looks, then dump the rest out the other side of the filter and you will see how dirty it really is.  Fuel filters are pretty good at picking up contaminates.  It is when people run them till they are no good.  That is when you start burning the dirt that is in the fuel.

while we are on the subject...

i have been wanting to replace my fuel filter for some time now.  if someone would be so kind as to help me out:  where exactly is the filter located?  how do i replace it?  and where do i buy a replacement?

Any auto parts store should carry the replacement fuel filter.  It shouldnt be expensive at all.  Under $10.
Its located underneath the car on the passengers side just behind the rear wheel.  Its a big (4" round) cylinder on a metal fuel line.  They changed the way it connects a couple times so it could either be clips or threaded fittings to disconnect it.  You might want to spray some penetrating fluid on the connector if its threaded so it loosens it a little bit.  The last thing you want to do is kink one of those lines while turning the connector.  Make sure you use 2 wrenches.

how exactly do you go about removing the old filter without spraying gasoline all over the place and thereby emptying your entire gas tank on yourself and the ground just to change the filter?

i slowly pulled the tube off the clip from the filter and... spray... gas went everywhere.  any suggestions?

Did you relieve the fuel pressure before you took the hose off?  If not then that could be your problem.  You can relieve the pressure through the pressure relief valve.  It is just to the right of the intake plenum, almost underneath it.  It's pretty easy to find.  Good luck!
