I believe you can if you use the heads and all.

Someone else would know better than I do

Yes you can do a 3400 or 3100 large port top end on a 3.1 MPFI motor. You need custom length pushrods though, and I'm sure if you ask over on 60degreev6.com someone has the size written down somewhere.

You will gain quite a bit over a stock MPFI top end I know thats for sure, BUT just remember if you can't tune for the changes you might as well not make them because the ECM can't compensate that much for what your doing.

The only limitation I know of as of now is you can't do 3500 heads on anything smaller than a 3400 block since the bore will begin to intrude on the combustion chamber. The 3400 head gaskets HUG the edge of the 3500 chamber as it is now.

It might as well be. Finding a 2.8/3.1 that is not in need of a rebuild is pretty unlikely, and that cost alone would be more than finding a complete 3400.

Even at that, low mileage 3400's are getting harder to find as the cars that are being scrapped are getting older.

Hell even super low mileage 3500's are getting rare.

yea my gt only has 76,000 in the new motor... but the body had 150,000 with hardly any rust... the only thing rusted out is the gas cap but those always rot out in these cars....

Yeah I'm looking for a low miles 3400 just because I'm stuck with the stock computer(OBD 1.5). If I had the money that is, jerks at Car Part in my area ask like 1G for one with low miles.

Here you go ohiorunner

This will show how much of a PITA it is, not that a 3400 swap for you would be all that more easy.

wow thats alot to do... well i just bought i turbo system today off my buddy for 250 bucks and i am painting his bike... so im thinking about going that route instead... i have dealt with turbo cars before so i will be ok with this one... just thought i would see if i could do it at a reasonable time a cost... but i dont want to get into getting custom push rods and stuff like that... so turbo for me but only like 10psi....

custom pushrods are much easier than building a 3.1 to hold 10 PSI.

You put 10 pounds into an 18 year old 3.1 and you'll be doing that swap sooner than you might imagine!

yea i was thinking that too... could i get away with maybe 5 cause i will have a boost controller and all of that... i do still have my 2.8 that i might rebuild and do it proper with forged everything and balanced crank... and when i get that done i will throw alot of boost to that i just want something kinda fast right now...

Why in God's name would you even consider rebuilding a 2.8/3.1 when 3400's can be had for a fraction of the cost?
