99 gtp are the one to go for especially if you decide to tune they have better s/c and maf id=f you decide to mod and tune yourself but good luck

Yeah, definitely avoid the '97. 4T60-E is FTL on those.

personal preference, I'm running 12's with the said FTL 4t60e... Obviously upgraded but it does show it can be done. Yes a 4t45e has better controls though if you go newer... With OBDII programming you can change shift times and pressures which I wish I could do.

He said grand prix GTP.. as far as I knew all 97 and newer GTP's got the 4t65e-hd. Unless I'm missing something here?
A 97 GT would have a 4t60e
98 and newer GT's have a 4t65e.

Well, not that your 4T60-E is FTL, but a stock one that's been behind a heavy GTP for 14 years sure wouldn't be recommended.

Just so you guys know, 96 3800S2 SC motors are the only ones that got the 4t60E and they were an HD unit at that. Those are kinda rare to find.
In 97 when Pontiac changed the body style of the GP the 3800S2 SC motor came stock with the 4T65E-HD up thru 03 then the trans got a revision in 04.
Honestly, you want a 97 or 98. The 99-03 are the ones that had a service bulletin out for spontaneous combustion of the engine bay. If you dont believe me, look it up and you will see. The 97 has just as much aftermarket support as the later ones. If you wander onto the W-body boards, you will see, 99-03 were notorious for engine fires. 97-98 are the only years that didnt have the issue. How do i know all this, i used to be BIG into the W-body scene, i had lots of years of research

the engine fires were just from the valve cover gaskets leaking

. Did a few of those safety recalls myself.

From what i read from GM TSB's it wasnt valve covers it was a fuel line routing problem, something about possible fuel line damage because it ran close to the exhaust manifold, it would melt the lines, cause a leak then a fire. It was never a recall, it was just a TSB. Park Aves, Bonne's and GP's all had the same problem. There have been a number of 99-03 GP's and Park Aves in the yards out here that were a result of the fire.

the fire stems from where the fuel lines connect on top of the s/c their is rubber o-rings in where they clamp together that dry out from the heat of the s/c in return would leak fuel to start the fires. i would say 98 are the best year for gp as they have the different vac setup from the 97 on the s/c and their has been many people that upgrade the trannies as long as you can tune for the 04 newer as i have heard thats when they started to get better but you would have to reroute the tranny cooler lines

Avoid the 97's; they were a bit quirky to deal with (electrical issues, transmission issues, etc). I'd get a 98-00 if I was going to get one again ( I had a 2000 GTP).
