Can some one verify wheather or not the vin # plate is riveted to the dashboard itself or to a metal surface on the chassis?  I'm refering to the VIN # underneath the windshield on the driver side... can it be removed ?

On my '95 it appears to be on the chassis and the dash is molded around it.  I think on my '90 thought it may have been on the dash itself.

It is not part of the dash. It is attached to the car and cannot be removed legally.

Edit: It is also posted on the chasis in several spots. (i.e. in engine bay & in the trunk.)

It's riveted down.   The base that it's riveted down on is part of body structure.  Those rivets are special from GM, and cannot be bought.

yup it to the metel in the dash and pad surounds it..  the only way to get at it, it to removing the windshield..

Do not mess with your vin tag!!!!  In some states you can go to jail for many years!!  Also you could have your repoed by the state..
