i am extremely frustrated with the 2.2 so i need to know what performance mods can be done or if there is any way to swap over to the ecotec 2200. I have searched all over and cant find anything but stupid $20 chips on ebay. so what are you guys thinkin on this one?

haha idk man..i love my fuel economy but that engine just has been a problem left and right...and i only have the 3 speed auto

but on the bright side my car has come a long way! euros,z body kit,gtz wheels, working cruise control, z26 gauge cluster, gtu spoiler, sun roof, rear disc brakes, power windows.....so i guess i have some things to be happy about lol

Trust me you don't want an Ecotec unless it's boosted. Quads are better all around engines for low and top end power.

My response is my user name. I've had 2 2.2 automatic berettas in the past, and they both blew head gaskets between 80 and 85k. I traded the first one before fixing it, then my second one did the same thing, but the head cracked too. I had that replaced, and at 125k it went again. You have that problem yet? 2.2's matted to 5 speeds seem to hold up allot better due to the lack of heat from the trans I believe.
I've always wanted to do an ecotec swap, but it would have to be supercharged.

Around 100k the Eco's chain goes. Oh and don't reuse the crank pulley bolt, it will back out and you will lose all the oil. There are many other problems.
Oddly enough the is a kit for sale on the Ecotec site that would be a good thing to get. It would give around 250hp.
No I have not had a problem because my car has 42k on it. Damn thing is running a bit noisy though.
You have a PM.

It was me that got the PM about the supercharged ecotec swap kit.
MPB, maybe let this guy know about that kit too, maybe he'll be interested.
So Tylerlp, have you had to replace head gaskets on that 2.2 yet? What kind of mileage is on your car, and what year is it?

I'd listen to the ecotech comments - I've heard the same. What fuel mileage do you get in the 2.2?
The lemon used to be a 2.0. I liked the engine. Never knew fuel mileage I dont think I would have made the swap if I had an overdrive then. The 3spd auto trans is mated to it, and its a 1:1 ratio, or darn near. I don't know what the 5speed is on final drive ratio. I've swapped a manual in one once... waste of time now-a-days due to car pricing. I know I get 30mpg in the 3800 in top gear, and that is about 60mph at slowest or else I risk losing it. It'll still do it at 75mph. 2000rpm or so. That's my main idea behind my conversion. now I just found out the other day I get 20mpg if I'm stuck behind someone going 45mph. ouch.
Power is always good. Though I agree with cack, enjoy the fuel economy and keep your car clean. Anyone remember the fest in [Milwaukee?] with the family who decided to just show up with their red base and they won best original dashboard award? nice interior in that one!
I just went through ignition system checks and debated spark plug index washers... $20 not worth it for the fuel savings, so didn't do it.
One thing I don't agree with is turbo add on to your engine because bigger engines fit in the berettas and then they can add turbos.
andy <--likes having money for gas after mods
lemon <---3800 bit faster than the 3400 [was it kflo that wanted to race me with the 5spd?]
89gt <--- 2.8 188kmi original and 35mpg at 40mph egr bypassed for fuel econ [it works]

Andy - it probably wasn't me. My car didn't get completed until May/June of 2009 - prior to that point it was a 3.1 auto. While I have come a long was since then, I still wouldn't have challenged you at that point.
Depending what year your car is - a 5 speed swap can be pretty damn easy. I did one on a 91 2.2 car last summer in less than a week - taking a few days off. But, 91 is the last year it is that easy to swap. The newer mounting style in 92+ cars requires welding in a different mount for the trans.
So, as mentioned, depending on the year of your car - you probably have more options than you know. 91 and earlier were TBI engines, and don't respond as well to mods as the 2.2 mpfi engines.
An intake, header, exhaust and making sure your engine and trans mounts are in good shape would be first powertrain mods on my list if I were in your shoes.

They don't make an exhaust for the Beretta. The header is actually for a Cavalier, but it fits.
The guy from Texas, I likely sold him that header you speak of.
