i currently have a 1989 2.8 auto
What are my options as far as a motor swap, im very mechanicly inclined, ive read the 3800 swap needs a little fab work but i know i can do it but i couldent find the links to what is exactly required. my local junkyard is a GOLDMINE for N/A 3100's, 3300's 3400's and i saw quite a few complete 3800 series 2's.
I really want the 3800 supercharged motor...does this supercharger fit on any other engines?
I also love turbo's though and thought about slapping a turbo on the 2.8....
I also read somewhere i can swap 3400 top end onto my motor? what is envolved in this???

If your local yard is a goldmine for 3400 I'd go with a 2000-up motor IMO.....

03 3400 has revised gaskets and stronger internals and is direct swap for the most part other than havin to get custom motor mount from six_shooter over on v6z24.com and if ur inclined as u say u r u should be able to tackle it in wkd. their is more info on this on bstuff.com and quite few of us that have the wap in progress

Do i need to swap over a different harness or anything? Can i use the 2.8 ECU?
3400swap.com dosent mention anything about the swap into a 2.8 car...

You don't have to swap a different harness in.
IIRC, the only wiring you need to do that I can remember hearing about is putting your 2.8 injector connectors onto the 3400 injector harness... or something like that.
I believe you have to relocate the wiring for the coil packs as well, since those would be on the top of the engine instead of the bottom front near the oil filter.
You can use the ECM from the 2.8, but it's much advised to get a custom burnt chip from 60 Degree V6 for the 3400 fuel and spark tables.
You will need to get an EGR adapter... although I think there is a cheap DIY version instead of buying the adapter plate.
Other than that, it's pretty much plug and play.
Oh, and the M90 off the L67 will work on another motor... the L36

M90 is the style/size of the blower on the L67.
L67 = 3800 Supercharged Engine
L36 = 3800 N/A Engine
The 3400 will bolt up to your transmission just fine.

You will need a new front engine mount bracket to mount a 3rd gen engine (3100/3400/3500) into an 87-91.

I have the same issue, My '88 is getting a GenIII engine soon, what kind of mounts are needed to swap in that motor? I can see that the front motor mount will not attach to the gen III, what gives!?

I would say put in a 3400/3500 hybrid. Better flowing top end, and the ease of a mostly plug and play swap. You definately need to swap in a new style front engine mount though.

well, I don't really want to do just that, I am going to stick with a 2.8l displacement, but it's going to be in a 3100 block. I was kinda thinking about the 3500 uim, but only if I can find one in the junkyard.
any info on this motor mount?

I know what the front mount is, I work on 3100s and 3400s daily. but what I was wondering was how to install it in my car, an '88. I know that I need a new coolant reservoir.
I know, everyone says "what?!" when It comes to my engine idea. but If you use the smaller displacement it can make the most of the large intake and exhaust system of the 3100. both 2.8s and 3100s use the same 89mm bore and the crank bearing spacing is the same. so I get a stronger bottom end, Roller cam and lifters and short throw crank that should let the engine rev fairly high. I tested it on Desktop Dyno and got around 230HP and 240 lbft torque. so there are definite gains. I like efficiency, not just displacement.

We had a 3100 with a 2.8 crank in it at school. I never would think of doing that but if you want to, go for it. There were sources for a motor mount you could buy and bolt up so that you didnt have to weld at all. I think it was the 60 degree store. If you look around you should be able to find the info.
