Ya I did that math, BUT in a race situation the idea is to get max HP at 1320 feet.
6600 RPM red line and 1:1 in 3rd and assuming the car will run 120 mph and it's wanting 4:10's or 4:30's (Actually 4:27)
I don't want it going into OD on the track. And 120 MPH may be a little high.
But that is drag race thinking!!
I'm going to likely back it off to maybe a 3:90.
That will still keep it under 2500 or so on the highway.

Under 2500 would be fine. I remember a Nova I use to see on the highway on the weekends. That poor engine was running around 3k something to 4k at 65mph. Took off like crazy, but man that was just pointless wear as Woody said. I don't remember what my friends car was turning, but it could do 110 in 2nd with another gear to go. Now that was a highway car and had nothing to do with the strip.
Sorry, sometimes it's just nice to remember a fun car. He would pull down to 1st at 35mph and the race was on. About midway in 2nd the race is over and the poor Stang Gt was way back there. The white 74 Camaro beats another rich kid in a 5.0. Good times!

Has anyone brought up the 6 speed automatics? I've seen the 6 speed manuals brought up a few times but not the 6 speed autos.. Driven tons of vehicles with the 4l70-basically a TH400 with OD- (not a fan) 4l60-based off the 700r4- (slightly more of a fan), and 6L80. Personally, I like the 6L80 the most. You will need a stand alone trans controller either way.. so why not? Stand gear ratio is 4.027-2.364-1.532-1.152-0.852-0.667. Tighter shift points should keep you up in your power band longer (but you will lose some time and consistency in shifts.) Just another chime in for a 6 speed. But you can't go wrong with a 4 speed either.

4L70 is based on the 60. the 80 is basically a TH400 w/ an overdrive gear and electronic control.

There is a "6-speed" conversion for the 4L80-E. I just happened to produce the catalog with them in it a couple weeks ago.

I remember driving through leaf land heading to Niagara Falls it seemed like gas stations were few and far between.
This sounds very cool! But it makes me glad that my aspirations are to simply slap a boosted ls motor into a nice ugly G body.

Power to weight ratio will help it move the car along without much effort so cruising probably wont be that bad... also 3k at 70 it wont be in PE or anything so it will be running at 14.7 a/f. It might average out around 24-27 when off the throttle.

0.7:1 Overdrive should net this thing ~ 22 - 25 MPG.
Camaros and Vettes with these engines are getting close to that and are a lot heavier than this little thing will be.
12 gallons X 22 MPG is 250 + miles. Who the hell wants to sit in a damn Beretta more than 4 hours??
How far do ya think I'm going to drive this thing?
B'Fest (wherever the Hell it is) plus NE in Kingston 2014 are about it.

We can drive almost 8 hours on a 10gal tank of fuel in the wife's car! haha And it should be about the same with the 22gal tank in the Camaro.
I still think a 3.73 would be a little better and might even hit 30. Wouldn't that be funny for an LS3 Beretta? Make a great car for Hot Rod Power Tour. That's the plan for the Z28 when done.

4L80E is a brute of a transmission with enough aftermarket parts to rebuild it completely in billet.
I would love to have a 6L80E but the 4L80E is substantially cheaper, easier to build, fits in place better with more torque converter options.
I've seen lots of trucks with 6L80E's that don't get much better overall fuel economy. I've got a super smooth and strong shifting 4L80E in my 2500HD that's runs AMSOIL universal ATF and a Superior "shift correction kit", that runs like a champ.
I built up a TH350 for my K5 Blazer because it would be cheaper than the 700R4/4L60E or 4L80E route, but I now regret not grabbing an early 80E and spending the money on that. I had to spend a bunch of money to get the TH350 strong enough to handle what a shift kitted 4L80E can do without batting an eye lash.

That wouldn't be bad then. So what are the benefits of running stand alone controllers over robbing a ecu and harness from a car or truck? My line of thinking is basically if I broke down far from home it would be nice to say for diagnostic purposes this is an 2012 camaro etc. I no nothing about the stand alones though.

I'm sure the robbing of a harness could work but then he has to have the BCM deleted and such and god who knows what else is controlled or wants to be controlled by a newer car ECU. Granted for diagnostic yes that would be nice but I think for simplicity and cleanliness of an install the stand alone ECU will provide them with everything they need... and then on top of that the programming is 100% customizable compared to a Stock ECU that maybe 75% of the tables are mapped out on.

that is being generous. depending on the calibration(and vendor's software), i'd say more like 25-33%. some VERY popular stuff, maybe 50-75%.
there are SO many complex functions that are not defined in most calibrations. some of which should never really be touched to begin with, but some are quite important/useful.
