fuel tank acts like its 12 gal after new fuel pump

Post by badbluballinGTX »

So I returned from deployment last year and my ex-g/f had my 1994 z26 and ran it out of gas (which she did not admit but I figured out when finding the new gas can in the trunk and she gave me a weak alibi) then apparently cranked on the starter not knowing it was empty because the newly replaced starter also needed replacing. Anyhow a shop replaced the fuel pump and when I got back the gas gauge seemed to drop quickly and I thought the mileage was bad but when it read empty it only took 12 gallons max. I knew it was empty and not a bad reading because it would hesitate when stomping on the gas like it does when it’s really low on fuel. Looking at it, it still looks like the original tank. Could the new pump assembly be the wrong one or mounted high to where it is not reading or sucking up the gas towards the bottom of the tank? This is very strange and I appreciate any help or insight that can be provided.

Should be spring loaded to go to the bottom, but who knows....

that's odd... most shops 9/10 reuse the fuel pump assembly... if not they will charge you out the as$ for a new one, im guessing they may have dropped something in the tank... lol, i know that sounds funny but its possible.  Check to see if they have any dents or anything on the tank that could be using up space

reuse the fuel pump? that's what was bad and being replaced. I didn't see any 4 gallon dents either. Sorry for being a smartass but thanks for the help.

Just had to clear it up.  The --------assembly-------- is the part that has the fuel lines and such coming from it.  The F/P sits in the middle of it.

ya there is probably a tube I forget what it's called but it's made to get the last few gallons out of the bottom. It's either now missing or not attached right..

What could of happened that the sending unit got banged around and messed up the the level an float on the sending unit causing the gauge to read funny or you have a bad ground..

as for the tank only taking 12 gals to fill i have a idea.
some tanks have plastic ballest / windage tray.  to keep the gas from sloshing around.  after sitting around sometimes they brake loose and float up a little usualy banging into the fuel pump an sending unit..
