1995 5 speed transmission

Post by kellu »

yeah, I hate the automatic trans in my car. I hated it in my moms 3.1 lumina also. I would love to get a 5 speed in there so I can shift it when it should. Getting really tired of my trans going back and fourth gears and shaking the hell out of my car whenever I go up a hill at 55 lol.

Well that's because there is something wrong with it... lets not blame that on the sheer fact that it's an automatic...

my old automatic had a problem, it shifted the gears by itself. Removed it and installed a 5 speed, problem went away.

There has been many swaps preformed on these cars over the years.

there is a thread started here http://www.beretta.net/forum/viewtopic. ... 1&start=15

but this was the most accurate guide i followed when doing my swap

http://www.v6z24.com/howto/5spdswap

good luck its a bit of work but in the end totally worth it

any car with a 3.1 or 2.8 5 speed beretta would be best as you need everything

Think I could pull one off a cavalier? Cuz there is only one beretta in the yard closest to me and I've already disassembled most of it for future use of parts lol, and it's also an automatic.

Please read the threads linked... the TYPE of transmission needed is outlined in there... Whatever car you find it in is fine you just need that specific trans.

I also hope your aware that a 95 v6 never came with this option so your in for a decent amount of work on the Beretta starting with welding in a motor mount to even get the trans to bolt in.

Doesn't matter what car it's from, it matters which trans it is, should be easy and cheap to find another one since they used these transmissions in alot of cars.

My GTU now has a ~85ish Iron Duke Buick Century trans in it.

Someone told me they came in all berettas, and I can't remember which cavalier cars had them, but someone also told me not to go with the lumina or Grand Prix getrag cause its tge 284 the rare one to find parts for should you break it

Edit: your best bet would be to find someone junking or parting a rusty gt from 91-93 and make sure its the 3.1 and take everything shift cables, linkage, pedals, shifter, trans, flywheel have it turned and put a spacer in to make up for what you shaved off so the input shaft is through the clutch enough, and last get the console!!

282s are very reliable, came in all 5 speed V6 jbody cars from the late 80s to 1994

Your biggest problem will be shifter cables and welding in the other mount.

If you have to shim the flywheel to make up for what you shaved off of it you should NOT be using that flywheel. The amount taken off flywheels when they are turned are SO thin you would never have to shim it to make the input shaft go through the disc the same amount... that statement is just nonsense.

I can also see Kellu you never read the threads since you asked AGAIN what trans you need after I told you to read them. You need to READ some more do some more research using search engines or forum search area's... Even if someone hands you all the info I think you have no idea what your in for yet and it will be completely overwhelming. I find it very frustrating when this info is on this forum but someone is too lazy to search and read posts they just ask everyone else to do it for them... Yes some may have weird characters in them from the conversion but they still have the info there! USE IT.

In all honesty my knowledge of transmissions is very slim lol. If I do get the 5 speed for it I'm going to have to get it put in at one of the many transmission shops in my town(theres a lot of ford owners so we have an abundance of transmission shops). Anybody have a site I can order one of these transmissions?

@3x00: You told me to read threads linked which there were none linked. By all means if you link me the threads I'll read them. This is a forum for beretta owners to communicate with other beretta owners right? So what's wrong with asking questions from people who already know better than me? It's why I came to this site, to learn from people who already know these cars extensively. I do have an idea what I'm in for, everything I've done on this car yet has been a pain in the ass compared to other cars I've worked on. I honestly know that there is no way in hell I could do this transmission swap by myself. If anything I'll take it to a shop or get one of my more experienced friends help me with it (by experienced I mean actually know what the hell they are doing).
