Rear brake backing plate

Post by heavywoody »

I need one since I damaged mine removing a bearing (the bolt stripped out and the only option was to cut it with a die grinder, and the cut wheel went into the backing plate a little).

I can use mine if I have to, but I'd rather not if I can help it.

It would be perfect if it could be shipped out this week so I could get it by Friday/Saturday so I can put the car back together this weekend.

Paypal ready, shipping is to 28027.

Thanks!
Geoff

Dang man just stripped that GTZ yesterday. Could have grabbed it off of there.

When I had a problem with a bolt on my 90 I went to the auto parts store to try to get the backing plate. I found out it was the same as a Camaro, but I don't remember what years. I think it was third gen.

I see them on Advance Auto Part's site, but no picture to verify. It's pretty cheap, $15, compared to the one I found on eBay for $66.

I have a pair in really nice shape. They are just missing the center section where they mount to the axle. haha

Can you just weld the cut mark in yours?

I could, I'll probably just do that and be done with it. I haven't even looked at it to see how bad the cut is, I just saw it when I was spraying PB blaster on the brake lines going into the wheel cylinders. Hopefully the line doesn't break when I replace the wheel cylinders... damn MI car.

I can't complain too much though; I haven't touched the back brakes in the 14 years of ownership, and they still have about 3/16" of material on the shoes.

They still appear to be available from GM.

18014165 (right) and 18014164 (left) are the part numbers.

Good to know; I don't think mine is bad enough to warrant spending $70-80 on one though.

Yeah, I've realized how much front bias these cars have after testing the pressure out of the master cylinder. Stock it's 1400psi front, 500 rear.

The plan is to do a rear disk conversion, but I highly doubt I'll have all the parts together and ready to go on the car before heading west. I'm trying to get the car driveable for a trip north in the next two weeks...
