Re: IRS PROJECT: Chevy Beretta FF

Post by Amateur »

Its been a while since I updated this. As far as the IRS goes..it's up in the air. I have to do some shortening to the IRS arms, so it can tuck in back nicely. The big thing is how I'm going to do the shock towers in back. I need to measure out a Jbody's strut towers to see if I can transfer them over. The Jbody's have really tall towers in back, and may not clear the smaller spaced Beretta rears...unless I modify the IRS struts some way to shorten them. I was also thinking about just saving the IRS for the eventual Sunfire I want to buy as a DD for the winter (plug and play with that chassis). Must protect the Beretta from winter salts! That route would see me do the neon rear disk swap on the 'retta and possibly a 1995 Lumina master cylinder swap (I really have to look into this) to get the appropriate proportioning for the calipers, front to back.

Either way, I bought a new set of headers for The Beretta and am waiting for them to be shipped to me.

This can allow my car to exhale easier because the stock ones are very poorly designed. It's a 4-2-1 with an inlet of 1.5" and an outlet of 1.85"
Realistically I won't get around to installing it until the first week of September.

Still haven't installed my sweet headers. College and my 2 jobs have been enslaving me these past few weeks. I did manage to make time today to make myself a new grill. The parts are a stock Beretta grill+Cavalier Z24 bowtie+Filleting said Beretta grill. The inspiration came from Weba and I like how it turned out. I do not like that my car hasn't been washed lol.

That looks good! The Z24 wheels look great on it also.

I hope one day to find a Cayenne 2.2 5 speed to put the GTU kit and GT crosslaces on that I have sitting in the garage.

Thanks! It's no where near the level you're operating at, I've seen your thread. You're overhauling your whole car; engine, brakes, wiring harness, the whole nine yards.....aaaaaand I'm getting excited over a plastic red bowtie on my grill lol!

The wheels look good and are pretty light. The only thing I dread about them is that they are only 6" wide. I have 205/55 tires on there and they feel sooo mushy when cornering compared to the 7" I had before. I feel 195/55 would be better suited to this rim. It probably doesn't help that I have cheap Chinese Fuzion tires on it right now lol.

This is how I feel like when I drive my car:

I checked the GF's Z24 wheels vs my Z26 wheels and found that the Z24's were five pounds less each(with tires).

Yeah I believe the Cavi wheels weigh in at 17.1 lbs, which is a pretty good weight for a stock rim. I know decent aftermarket 16x7" rims usually hover around that range.

I had those same wheels with the same size tires for winter a few years. They do ride really soft. Mine were also soft snow tires...imagine how much fun that was! haha And FWIW those 16x6s weigh the same as my 17x7s do.

Wheel weights vary a TON.... Most (but not all) of the time weight is an inverse proportion to price.

My 17x8.5s weigh 16.9 lbs

I'm utterly surpised at this! You have the biggest, widest wheels/ rubber combination known to man and yet the rims don't even break 17?! It's MADNESS! I really wonder how much they cost you for the set. I also bet your Beretta is glued to the floor with so much rubber on tarmac action.

I remember reading that article!

Either way, the Magnesium wheels are probably the least common C5 wheels in the US. All 4 are front wheels. I picked them up second hand either off eBay or CorvetteForum. It's my favorite wheel that I've had on it. Some day they'll go on the Z26.
